Ideas for home made stuff for cages
«
on:
February 15, 2007, 10:17:45 AM »
I thought I would start a thread where people can give ideas of home made stuff for their ratties to help out those who can't buy stuff.
I made hammocks from:
1. Cloth baby diapers
2. The leg of an old pair of jeans
3. An old tub sock
4. Wash cloth
5. Fabric samples (drapery type fabrics)
They worked great.
What do others use or what have you found that did not work well?
I was also well known for using any box that would fit. When one got pee soaked I would switch it out for a new one. Oatmeal boxes seemed to work great.

Baskets! Get them for 50 cents from Thrift Stores and hang them with zip ties....my kids loooooove their baskets until Tumby chewed them to pieces one by one, lol.
I guess it's not really homemade...Oops!

That is a great idea!!!!
And it is too home made because the darn baskets were not designed to hold ratties.
I will have to try that one. Thanks for sharing.

I have been using my old cloth diapers, too. I knew I saved those for a reason! Dollar store bins zip tied to the side work great, as well as those big plastic tubs with lids that coffee or sugar come in. I cut a hole in the side, and attached it with a zip tie. Of course, shoe boxes, tissue boxes, pop tart boxes, etc. I like to cut the end off oatmeal canisters to make short tunnels. Keep the ideas coming...I'm all for cheap ratty stuff, especially because my cage of new boys seems particularly destructive.

- make hammocks out of dollar store baby blankets - they have fleece Christmas blankets now! - pocket hammocks, fabric baskets, cubes, etc
- cereal boxes
- baby toys - a lot of the hard ones can be put in the dishwasher to clean!
- Thinking about cutting up a pringles can for them
- change old teeshirts into hammocks
- undergarmets can make some great hammocks too!

I keep thinking about making some pouch hammocks out of those packs of washcloths - but would the little loopies catch on their nails?
JR try the office supply section - the little note baskets etc come in packs of 3 or so at walmart for a couple of dollars and you can hang them with zip ties too, put some fabric lining etc!
Fabric easter baskets will be back out soon!
Yard sales are great too! people selling blankets or old clothes or toys can give you some great ideas!

I have been looking at the cloth Easter baskets. If anyone finds cute not-so-Eastery cloth basket, please post where ya found them.
I use towels and wash rags without any trouble (so far). My favorite is to sew an old wash rag together with some flannel or fleece and make litle blankets they can throw around the cage. Great for lining the dollar store bins and baskets too.
Cat/Dog toys also = Rat toys
If you have room in the cage or freerange area, fill a large box with packing material or crumpled paper and let them dig and explore. Keeps mine busy for a long time.

I use those dollar store baskets, too - just zip tie them to the sides of the cage, toss in a fleecy blanket, and instant rattie bed! PVC tubes aren't expensive and can always be re-used. Another BIG hit is hanging wicker baskets! You can get these at dollar stores too. Just toss in a piece of fleece and there's another ratty bed

A dollar store drawer organizer, hand it up with shoelaces and it becomes a fun swing!
Got an old Dearpie hammock that you're not wanting to throw away just yet? Tie the gormets together to make a tunnel!
Oh, the possiblites are endless!

Then Dearpie should be honored, because they destroyed one of her new hammocks the first time it was in their cage. And I mean DE-stroyed. Nothing left to salvage.

i posted some of this in another thread but here it is again.....
i have made 99% of the stuff in jellys cage:
old shoe boxes with holes cut for a door, lined with old baby blankets = house
"the pooh stuff is from a baby crib bumper thing...i cut it in sections and sewed the strings on it in the right places to make a hammock....then took the bed skirt (from the same set) and cut the designs off to make little shelf liners and blankets...the rest of the materials in the cage are some old fleece baby blankets...and some of my old fleece pjs, i found cutting the arms off and folding them makes nice little tubes and pocket like beds"
shoe box filled with old pj scraps
hammock made from baby crib bumper
box on 2nd shelf , left side is the shoe box house

boxes, boxes and more boxes. cut holes in various places, tape them together you have have a great "castle" for the bRats to play in. just make sure and place the holes so you can reach all corners of all the boxes for when playtime is over.
I love getting stuff for the rats at garage sales. Baskets are great, toddler toys are good too (who still has a barn??) I use old clothes to make hammocks and tubes.

You know those giant nut containers, the planters ones? They're clear with a yellow lid. Anyways, one of those on it's side is very popular with my boys. Also, plastic ice cream containers with the lid left on are great. What I do is I flip it upside down so the lid becomes the base, then I take a razor and cut a door. If it's one of the big one gallon tubs, I cut little windows. Best of all you can wash it out and the rats like to chew it. You can also do the same with large Tupperware. I like the hanging, tiered fruit baskets, they look like they'd be fun in a rat cage, but my cage isn't big enough to try that. Oh, I took strips of fleece and tied them to different links in a length of chain. My boys like to pull on the the fabric, and sometimes try to climb it. It's also popular with birds.

Target has bandanas for $1 that make great hammocks (my boys have all kinds of cozy ones and that dumb bandana is their favorite! lol). They had mini Easter fabric baskets like y'all have been talking about for $1 too, but they looked too small for ratties to spend time in. My Target also had plain little purses with Captain Jack Sparrow and I forget what the other one was... for $1. They aren't fabric they're sort've slick, so they'll be easy to clean.
They had tiny butterfly shaped bowls for $2 in another section that would be perfect for fresh foods.
My kids love toilet paper tubes (been meaning to make a fun one that they have to break open for treats inside), oatmeal containers, tissue boxes (their favorite and mine!), any type of used fabric (dollar store blankies, bandanas, jeans, fabric scraps, dish towels, etc.), and I made a digging box with a plastic container (it's wide and round, originally had brownie bites from Walgreens in it--double bonus
), some cleaned rocks (to try to keep their nails short), and paper from our shredder. I usually put their food and any dry treats in the digging box so they have to dig through to find it. A salad bowl from a fast food restaurant would work for a digging box too.

I cleaned out our closet and dresser tonight and found things that don't fit anymore, have a stain here and there etc....
SO.... my rat fabric is restocked. I took one old sweatshirt today, cut the sleevs off and made 2 hammocks out of those, sewed 2 lines down the middle of the chest and cut between those and folded up to make a pocket in each and wow - 4 new hammocks! The boys couldn't even wait for me to hang them up before they had to check them out and start stashing in them!
Cage totally redecorated!

It's not really homemade but mum made this great little igloo by cutting a door in an old salad container/large lunch box. Unfortunately I ddn't see what she cut it with, though I'd say it was a sharp carving knife. More unfortunate is I left it back at her place
My version is to cut doors in icecream containers. I even made a corner litter pan out of one.
Peg baskets are also fun. I use rectangle pot mits that are on sale as a mattress inside as I don't have a sewing machine.
I make hammocks by putting grommet holes in washclothes. Next I'm going to try a double decker one by using a handtowel.
Finally pavers, tiles and rocks are LOVED by ratties, great for their claws and hold fabric down.
And lets not forget full toilet rolls or boxes of tissues
so messy

Yeah i use the large icecream tubs, just cut a hole in the side, put the lid on and use that for the bottom. $2 peg baskets, my girls love that, its a bed and a swing. I use Hand towles for large hammocks. I have lots of fun making paper mache houses for my girls. They love that, they get to play in it and chew it up. You can turn paper mache into any shape you want to. My girls also love playing in just newspaper strips. Cut a newspaper into 1inch strips and just place in a pile in the cage. They will run through it, dig in it and eventually drag it all over the cage to sleep with. Any scrap cloth i have i dump on top or at the side of the cage so they can have fun pulling it into the cage b4 they sleep with it.

The Dollar Store is such a great source for rattie toys. OK it does cost a few dollars but you can buy a lot for a few dollars there. You can find cute baskets and blankets that you can convert into hiding/sleeping places. As for chewing toys I got Styrofoam balls, cork pieces, wooden dice and rubber balls. You can save corks from wine bottles and hang them on a thin rope or something. Keep the boxes that you would throw out, cut holes in them, connect them and you have a maze for the rats.

I have made toilet paper mache...just get some cheap toilet paper, wet, and drape over a balloon or something. Let dry and pop the balloon. It's just toilet paper, so it's totally safe. I forgot about that...haven't done it in a while.

The paper mache is a great idea! So it hold together with just water? I heard you can also use corn starch, right?

just a quick question about something i was told....is newspaper safe? someone told me it can cause "black lung disease" in rats....they claim thats from personal experience....anyone ever heard of that?? i gave it to jelly once and was then warned about it,now im scared to give it to her, but she did seem to love it...
