Rattie Ratz currently has a litter of black eyed white babies. They will be ready for new homes in mid June. I have some older boys from this same rescue situation and they are super sweet!

Oh no, no, no....not mid June, not in Northern California where I will be moving TO this mid June. Is this fate? Any possible transport to San Jose? Could I tentatively put a hold on a baby boy? Is having him neutered an option?

My bf is going to kill me... maybe you can tell me there aren't any boy babies...

Contact their foster mom, MC.  I think she's just started taking reservations.  Transport is possible and I'm sure neutering can be arranged.  I'm told there are 6 girls and 4 boys.

Readers Digest version.  There was a woman who got some rats.  The girls were pregnant.  She didn't know how to tell male from female, so there were more babies.  She contacted Rattie Ratz when she got to about 60 or 70 rats.  Almost all BEW's.  We referred people.  She didn't have answering machine or cell so people couldn't reach her most of the time.  A week or 2 after contacting us she decided she couldn't cope and hooked a hose up to her car exhaust, killing all but the ones she wanted to keep for herself and 2 females that had just given birth.  Shortly after that she surrendered the moms and babies along with 2 slightly older babies to us.  These are the survivers.

The woman is, to put it politely, unbalanced.  I was one of the RattieRatz volunteers who went to her house to evaluate the situation and see how we could help her.  There were 2 cages, 1 with boys, 1 with girls.  All about 4-5 weeks old.  In a third cage was a mom with a week old litter.  There was a small cage with about 5 adult males she planned on keeping.  She chose them because when she held them up they were the ones who reached out and touched her face.  She felt that was their way of telling her they wanted to stay with her.  Their cage was on top of a larger cage that should probably not have more than 8 or 9.  She said she had ordered another cage.  Couldn't tell you how many were actually in that one.  It was literally wall to wall fur and yet they were the sweetest things.  No fighting, no biting.  They'd take food out of your hand and then lick it clean.  Everyone was curious and friendly.  Maybe a dozen had facial markings, otherwise except for 1 black berk, it was all BEW.

This woman came to us for help placing them.  Told us she wanted them to go to good homes.  Said she didn't want them to go to anyone who might use them for snake food and didn't want to take them to the County Animal Control because they would kill them, yet ...... I cried for most of the week after I found out what she did and even now I still cry if I think about it too much.  There was 1 little 4 week old boy who had a marble sized lump on his back.  That little voice in the back of my head said, "slip him in your pocket."  I still have so much regrets for not listening to that voice.  He was so calm and still, no one would have noticed.

Three weeks after Julie and I went to this house the woman was finally talked into giving us the rest of the babies.  The day after she surrendered them, she actually had the nerve to call and ask for one of the boys back so she could breed them and "keep the line alive".  We've put in a call to the authorities.
