Weight gain in young rat-Pregnant?
«

I bought a 4 month old female rat. In 16 days, she gained 80 grams. Do you think she is pregnant? I thought she was housed with all females.

No, I am sorry; I don't have a digital camera at this time. How much to pregnant females gain? Along with this newly-big girl, I had also adopted another female who has only gained about 22 grams. They were the same age. Well, I guess I'll know for sure in at most 7 days, right. They're only pregnant for about 3 weeks...so I'll just wait it out. Thank you for responding. Anne

That does sound suspicious. In Bronwen's last 11 days of pregnancy she gained 97 grams. So I would say that she IS pregnant. Sorry.
Have you ever dealt with a pregnant rat before? She needs to be in her own cage (aquarium, small spaced wire cage, tupperware cage, or a wire cage with a deep plastic base. You have to start feeding her a lot more and higher on the protein to help feed the bubs she is carrying..etc.

Thank you for writing. It was interesting to learn that your girl gained 97 grams. My girl is eating all the time...it almost seems compulsive. Okay, she is pregnant. She will be okay. I'll take care of her and her babies...but at six weeks(right)...I am separating them all until I find out for sure who is male and who is female. Then I'll place the males with males and females with females. Sincerely, Anne

You separate at 5 weeks, but by then the males should have obvious testicles while the females do not.

The sexes have to be separated BY 5 weeks. I prefer to keep them with mom til then since they learn so much about being a rat from her.
I sexed my first (and only) ooops litter at 3 days accurately. You can use the anogenital method which is the distance between the genitals and the anus.
Here are 5 day old eepers to show you what I mean
Megan - female runt - very small space between genitals and anus
male - bigger space between, the scrotum develops here.
And some older babies
Megan again
Dwynn - male

A few months ago, I took in a young rescue rat and her litter of almost 5 week old babies.
She gained a huge amount of weight in less than a week (over 100 grams I think ...).
Thought for sure that she must have been with an adult male after giving birth and that she was probably pregnant ... she even had a slightly pear shaped belly for awhile.
Much to my relief, she wasn't pregnant, just undernurished.
It sounds like your girl is pregnant ... so prepare for babies but maybe you will get lucky and find out that she wasn't near any boys after all.

I myself had a nasty scare and thought I got a pregger girl, she put on weight, and had a VERY fat and tight belly, but she wasn't pregnant, just a bit of an eater
after quarenteen time, I moved her in with my two other ratties and though she's 5 months younger, she's almost as big as they are, and much denser than the other two
so maybe you just have yourself a bigger girl like I did, best of luck either way though!

Your photos are cute. Yes, I was just looking at my girl. I was holding her and feeling her belly...and I'm probably imagining this but I have just about convinced myself that I can feel a couple of individual babies protruding out the side. She is so cute, black and white Variegated. I placed her back in her cage and I watched her clean my cooties off her. She is so big she topples over when she gets off balanced. When she finished grooming, she decided to take a nap, and so she just slouched against the wall belly up and exposed. Like ...Good lord, just bring me a Pina Colada while I rest my head for just a minute. She is cute, but I certainly wasn't planning on being an expectant mother.

Hopefully you get to experience a baby moving under your fingers...its really wild! The babies will get super active just before birth...lots of squirming you can even see thru the thin skin of the flank.

Urgent, Please help. Momma had stow aways after all, and she had her babies today. I just came in to find that 4 have died and 4 others don't look like they are feeding. Mom is sitting on them and doting on them but they don't seem to be getting fed. Is this something that occurs on instinct? Shouldn't they know what to do. I feel bad. I wasn't expecting babies but now that they are here...they are so sweet...I'd hate to lose them. Will the babies feed tonight if I leave them alone? Sincerely, Anne

do the babies have milk bellies (a whte band in the on their bellies?) That will be able to tell you if they are feeding.
Umm, will leave more responces to people who knoe :hugs: sorry about the ones that didn't make it.

I am so sorry to hear about your babies! It is very sad.
Even more sad is that it sounds like mama isnt lactating. With some babies already dead and the remaining not eating, it seems it is the fate of the whole litter.
You can try feeding yourself but it is very difficult with newborns especially if they havent gotten to nurse off mama first.
here are a few links you can go through to help you try to save the remaining few.
http://www.ratfanclub.org/orphans.html
http://www.afrma.org/rminfo8.htm
http://www.fatratcentral.com/pages/reproduction/orphan.htm
http://www.rmca.org/Articles/orphans.htm
also check to make sure they have milk bands...you can see the milk through their skin on their tummys...so if you see a patch/band of white in their stomachs...that means they are eating.

There are not any milk bands...doesn't that not break your heart. I can't even attempt to get any formula until the morning. I feel weighted down by sadness. I looked at the mother and I don't think she is lactating. Her nipples are small and dry. Why? That is odd. I don't understand. She is pregnant; she should have milk. This is a travesty! Why is her body not doing what it is suppose to?

i got 2 females from a pet store and 1 was pregnant... luckily everything went well because i didnt know much about rat babies. There was a stillborn baby though
i kept the two females together and the "aunt" helped take care of the babies a lot because the mom is blind and she got tired of nursing them all the time. Now the babies are about 4 weeks old and it makes me so sad that they will be leaving me in a week
I hope your babies will be ok...

Chaos, just in case she forgets to update, she mentioned in Chat that one of the babies survived and even has a milkbelly!! Mom is trying to be a good momma and its a big eeper. Lets keep our fingers crossed. I wonder if she had a difficult birth and too much time passed for the first babies before feeding? Maybe that surviving baby was her last and there was less time before she fed it?
