Hi there!  I am new to the forum.  My name is Meghan, and I'm from Blairstown, NJ.  I had rats for several years, but have been without since about 2000.  About a month ago I rescued/adopted three rats.  They were used as bait at the end of a tunnel at a terrier trial.  The idea of the event is for the dog to go through the tunnel and bark at the rats in the cage.

After the trial I asked what they were doing with the rats, and was asked if I wanted to take them.  Well, how could I say no?  So I bought a cage and accessories and the next day went back and brought them home.  I had no idea about sex or age at that point, I'd only seen the rats from a distance.

Well, it was two females (one fawn hooded, one beige berk although I'm not 100% sure if she is beige) and a fawn self male.  As soon as we got them home it was obvious one female was very pregnant.   I picked up another cage for them and separated her the next day.  The day after that she had her litter.  There were 8 but only 7 survived.  They are just over 4 weeks old now.   All are fawn berks or selfs.  I have four males and one female available for adoption from this litter.

Two weeks after the first litter, the second female had her litter.  There were two stillborns and 10 live pups.  They are a little over 2 weeks old today.  There are 8 females and two boys.  All look to be fawns, beiges, or an in between color that I'm not quite sure what it would be considered.  There is one hooded female, and the rest are self or berk.  I have a couple of tentative homes for girls, but nothing set in stone yet.  They will be ready to go around the first week in June.

I've put a lot of work into socializing these babies, and they are very healthy and beautiful.  I have lots of pics.

Here is a link to half of the second litter (I hope these pics work):

Here is the male that I assume is the father of both litters:

The mother of the 2nd litter:

And the mom of the first litter (the night I brought her home - very pregnant!):

I am located in northwest NJ.  I would really like to find these babies homes, but I will keep them and love them for as long as it takes.  Feel free to e-mail me at ima_blue_meanie@yahoo.com if you'd like more information and pics, I am more than happy to chat about these babies.  I will be posting this on the rat lists and forums I joined recently so I apologize for any repetition!

Thanks for your time Smiley

Hi Meghan!  So glad you made it here.  Your babies are gorgeous!!!  And the dad and one mom look just like my boy Cash.  Now I have serious GGMR.  (Gotta Get More Rats!)  I have to remind myself I'm full up.

Love your screen name, by the way!

By the way, Meghan, if you make a post with some pics of the babies to introduce yourself in Rat Tails and Mug Shots, you'll get lots of friendly responses...we're not allowed to have "discussion" on the Adoption Page unless we're discussing interest in the actual adoption.  Blue Dumbo Smile

Here is a belly shot of one of the berks as requested.  Sorry for the bad pic..and uncomfortable rat LOL
Most of the berks have similar markings.

I *may* have a home lined up for the 4 boys from the first litters so I will post once I know for sure.

I have had a lot of interest in these babies in the last couple of days, and many requests for individual pics.  So I thought I'd just put together a page to show belly shots, individual shots, and which are available.  Here is the link:
http://www.phgsd.net/adoptrats.html

I will try to update as soon as one is reserved or adopted.

You can see the most recent pics at
http://www.phgsd.net/adoptrats.html

The pics are only a few days old, and it lists there which are available and which aren't.  After the  loong photo session, getting all the pics and cropping and listing them, I don't want to see a camera again for a long time! LOL
But I will get some new pics this weekend.  It looks like there are 5 girls available at the moment.

That was a very good thing you did Meghan, rescuing those poor ratties from that situation. Those poor mommas especially must have been so stressed out having dogs barking at them constantly.

On your picture site some of the babies were reserved for "George in NY". Does that mean you will be having a transport to NY? If so where in NY? I would be interested in the fawn hooded girl and one of her fawn sisters if we could arrange it. Are the moms and dad up for adoption too?

I don't think it will be a transport exactly, we live fairly close to the NY border.  Where in NY are you though?  I would be willing to drive an hour or so if you could meet me somewhere.  I did have someone offer to transport an hour or so from Carmel NY so if you are in that direction maybe that would work out.

I wouldn't mind adopting out the 3 adults, but I didn't really expect anyone to want them.  The fawn hooded female and the fawn male are both pretty skittish.  The other female is friendly but not quite lap rat material, at least not yet.  She comes right up to you and doesn't mind being pet and scratched, but is very squirmy if you try to pick her up.  I'm working with them although my focus has been 90% on the babies right now.  But if anyone is interested in them I'd be happy to chat.

I just wanted to bump these guys up again and add some new pics that I took this evening.  Four babies got adopted today so I'm down to 4 girls left at the moment.

Here is the fawn berk female from the first litter

I'm about 2 hours from Philly.  But I will be close to Philly on July 6 in the evening if you wanted to meet up.
It looks like 2 of the 3 girls I have left will be going home on Saturday so tentatively there is only one beige female available.
