I am finally ready to buy a larger cage for my 4 boys. (adult) I thought I wanted a FN but am reading alot about adapting it. I want a big cage that is easy to clean and needs no additional work before I can use it. Any ideas?

If you have adult boys, you don't need to modify it.  The modification is for people who have babies or small girls.  The FN is an awesome cage and super easy to clean...

If you want to know more about the FN, skimming the many pages of the "Ferret Nation pics.." thread helped me a lot when I was considering buying it.  You can get a lot of ideas about how people set up the cages, and there's a lot of commentary about it too.

IMO it's one of the best cages out there, INCREDIBLY easy to clean.  You shouldn't need to modify it if you have adult males, and it's actually pretty easy to put together (unless I'm like Wonder Woman or something and I don't know it... which is a possbility  Wink)  I highly recommend it.

I think the FN is perfect. I do agree that you need to modify if you have babies or tiny females though. I love mine! It is the easiest cage to clean.

I use fleece held in place by binder clips instead of carefresh.  It's cheaper, and since I switch it out every 2-4 days (depending on the stinkiness factor  Tongue) I don't smell any difference.

also the tray can fit bedding if you feel the need to go that route but i dont suggest it because the cage is HUGE it would take 1/2 to a full bag to fill im sure. And they can kick it out but I have seen a member on here with aspen bedding in the pans. I love my FN I use fabric as well.

If you don't have very many rats in the full 2 level FN (I currently have 4 in it) then even if you use fabric you can actually leave it for quite a long time (4 - 5ish days) without it getting smelly!

I have seven adult/older babies males in my FN 142 and change the fabric every three days or so. Its not that it really smells so bad at that point, its all the lab block crumbs/dust drive me nuts and I want it to look tidier Roll Eyes.

It would take alot of bedding to fill the pans of the cage and I cant imagine the mess they would make flinging and kicking it out.

even though i have small and young females and had to modify it with hardware cloth i would do it all over...i just love the cage!!  I have the upper level modified for the younger girls and the lower was standard ad it held the older larger girls.  I recently opened the cage up to the entire group and I KNOW FOR A FACT that all of the smaller girls can fit their heads thru but no one gets out....yet.  We keep the bedroom door closed becuz we have cats though.

STill the FN is the BEST cage around in my humble opinion.
