Tonight I gave my girls some Quinoa that was leftover from my dinner. Is this good for them? How often can I give it? They LOVED it!

I imagine it's pretty good for them. If they like it, then it sounds like a nice, healthy snack. The protein content is a little high compared to other grain type things, but it shouldn't be a problem unless they're getting TONS of it, all the time.

Quinoa is a good food item. I can't remember which one, but it is one of the main ingredients on some of the high quality dog foods that some of us feed our rats. I picked up some Quinoa seeds at Whole Foods in preparation for growing it in the garden this year.

I know when my mom cooked it she put butter in. I don't know how much though. How much Quinoa (with a little butter) can I give them?

I would leave it as a very rare treat if it's going to have butter in it. It's easy to cook up though, so you might as well just make them some without Smiley

Organic Quinoa is the main ingredient of the Petguard Organic Vegetarian kibble I feed.
Its protein quality is similar to that of eggs or milk, so it's a nice complete protein for my veggie kiddos.

May I ask why you keep your rats vegetarians?

Most of the harlan formulas are vegetarian(I believe), so I think more people have at least mostly vegetarian rats than know it.

Hm. Interesting. I'll sometimes give my girls feeder insects. and occasionally they get eggs or chicken. But their lab block (Oxbow) is vegetarian.

Linky on growing quinoa. I know I have others but not on this computer. It doesn't yield a lot but if you have a lot of room, no harm in trying!
