Does anyone use Green Mush?

I bought some for my rats today when I ordered some more lab blocks for them. Does anyone here use it or have any experience with it? It seems like a great addition to their diet!

I'm curious to see the answer to this as well as I've thought of getting it for my babes but worried about the kelp in it. Let us know how your ratties like it!

I've used green mush for several years now, and the rats eat it up in their oatmeal. However, I've switched over to a product I've been giving my dog, called
NuVet Plus
. I've had great success with the green mush, but I think better success with the NuVet. I've since had many rats exceed the 3 year mark, and vet bills have become just about non-existent.

Do you give them the dog version? How long have you been using the NuVet?

Yep, the dog version. I've been giving it to my rats for almost a year. I've been using it for a little over a year, almost a year and a half, actually for my dog. It took me a while to realize that the rats would benefit from the product also.

I use Green Mush with my kiddos. They really like it a lot and it's so good for them. I love that it's completely organic and the plant foods have been lightly processed to make digestion and utilization easier.
Also, *cough* it's good in human smoothies *cough*

The Green Mush and NuVet look really interesting. Especially the NuVet as Dearpie says she's had a lot of success with it. How are you supposed to dose rats with NuVet?
Also, I notice alfalfa is in these. I thought alfalfa was difficult for rats to digest?
Oh, and what about Missing Link? I've heard about that dog vitamin too.

I give the rats about 1/2 tsp overall, between 8 rats. I mix it into their oatmeal. The NuVet comes in either a powder or wafer form. The wafers are very easily crushed.
I'm not worried about the alfalfa, as it's pretty far down on the ingredients list:
Blue Green Algae, Brewers yeast, Cat's Claw, Evening Primrose oil, Shark cartilage, oyster shell, alpha amylase, beta carotene, pine bark, papain, L Methionine, alfalfa, chicken liver, vitamin B1 (thiamin), vitamin B2 9pyridoxine), vitamin B12, Vitamin D, Vitamin K, Manganese, Magnesium, Iron, Copper, Amino Acids (tryptophan, threonine, isoluecine, leucine, lysine, methionine, crystine, phenylalaine, tyrosine, valine, arginine, histidine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, glycerine)
Vitamins: A, E, C
Minerals: Phosphorous, potassium, zinc, calcium, selenium
Another thing about NuVet is that it can be ordered by referral. If anyone is interested, the phone number is: 1-800-474-7044, Order Code: 64623.

Nice. That stuff looks great. Do you just use plain oatmeal to mix it in? And do you give it daily?

NuVet? Green Mush?

For the NuVet, should one be concerned about the pine bark used as an ingredient?
http://nuvet.com/ingredients.asp
For the Green Mush, is it one teaspoon
per rat
?

I recently got some Green Mush for my boys. I mix a little bit of it with their baby food oatmeal (green oatmeal
). I did mix some with just water and they loved it. And yeah, it's one teaspoon per rat. I sprinkled a little bit on their fresh fruit last night.

my girls have nuvet powder every other morning in their breakfast, alternating with missing link (joint formula). whichever one you use please make sure you mix it in well. last month when shammie and i were at the vet, a puppy was seen for respiratory issues after "inhaling" missing link.

As for some information about pine bark in NuVet Plus, I've got it coming to me. I'll share the information once it arrives. Basically, it's a very powerful antioxidant in the form it's being used. It's also only 350 mcg per wafer, which a rat gets about 1/16 or so of a wafer. It's a trace.

For the Missing Link powder, is use of the joint formula for older rats only or should it be given to younger rats too?

I give liquid glucosamine to all of my rats in their oatmeal. I look at it as a preventative and don't worry about whether it's just for older rats. I've been giving it to them for years. So if you're using Missing Link, it would be fine for all. However, as a side note, if you're going to use the NuVet, you won't need the Missing Link. NuVet also has NuVet Joint, which I give to my dog. Between the two, it's really slowed down his back end problems.

When you have Sherlock home, try eating some of whatever it is you're offering him. Their natural instinct is not to eat anything unless they've seen someone else eat if first, without keeling over.

Did you get the wafers or powder? You can just sprinkle a small amount on whatever food he does eat, or if it's a wafer, break off a very small piece and offer it to him to eat. Mine take it willingly either way. A wafer is actually enough for about 14 rats, so it doesn't take much. (And there's really not an exact measured amount for a rat. I just use about a 1/2 - 3/4 tsp? in the oatmeal that is shared by 8 rats.

Oh yeah I think I read about that somewhere but forgot
They can't throw up so they are naturally really cautious of food right? I'll try that with him. He scarfed down the watermelon I gave him when he was at school and I put the NuVet powder on his bread square with olive oil (i need to go buy oatmeal haha) which he always practically swallows whole he loves it so much. My harlan teklad should come tomorrow so that'll be good
Rats are so much fun...I've spent way too much money already but hey...he deserves it right? I have a feeling he is the first in a long line of rats I will have

In the informational booklet from NuVet, it says:
Our scientists began with the premise that most pets are lacking the proper amount of antioxidants, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, omega fatty acids, and amino acids.
Although some pet food companies have added vitamins, miners and antioxidants to their products, there still isn't a commercial pet food or supplement on the market that can boost a pet's immune system like NuVet Plus. The manufacturing of commercial pet foods requires heating the ingredients to a high temperature which destroys the nutritional value of these ingredients. In addition, many commercial pet foods contain by-products that can make them poisonous, toxic, and capable of reducing the devastating effects of unstable oxygen molecules, also known as "free radicals."
Free radicals have been implicated in more than fifty health problems in humans and animals including various forms of cancer, allergies, skin and coat problems, arthritis, heart disease, cataracts, premature aging, tumors, reproductive difficulties, digestive problems and low energy levels.
After eight years of extensive testing, our scientists perfected their work by formulating NuVet Plus for Canines and NuVet Plus for Felines. NuVet Plus not only helps to dramatically combat the onslaught of free radical activity, but it also creates a powerful synergistic boost to the animal's immune system.
And since the specific ingredient Pine Bark is of concern to Darksong:
Pine Bark
- the proanthocyanidids in Pine bark have been shown in clinical studies to be 20 times more effective than Vitamin C and 50 times more effective than Vitamin E as an antioxidant. Pine Bark helps relieve pain and symptoms o f osteoarthritis, arthritis, rheumatism, and rheumatic fever. It has shown to reduce histamine production, thereby helping the lining of arteries resist mutagen attack which cause cardiovascular disease.
It used to be that my dog would go to the vet twice a year for a couple of steroid shots for his severe seasonal allergies. Since being on NuVet Plus over the past 1.5 years or so, he's not been to the vet once for these issues. Normally, he would have been at least 3 times during this timeframe. As for my rats, I've been giving it to them for about 8 - 10 months. It's just my personal choice to be giving this supplement to my own pets.
