How much does your vet charge for a visit with your rats?  No meds or surgery - just for the visit.  Does he/she give you discounts based on how many you have?    I would imagine it varies depending on which part of the country you're in but I was just wondering.

Mine is charging $78 for my three boys - full price for 1 and half price for the other 2.  I thought that was pretty good but I wasn't sure as I've never had rats before...

As far as I'm concerned, $78 for three rats is a great deal. Smiley My old vet, who was cheaper, charged $36 per animal, and if you brought in more than two the extra animals were free. They would cut me discounts often, giving me the $21 recheck fee for the ones they had seen recently or if my bill was particularly high that visit. Tongue

My current vet is wonderful but much pricier; it's $61 for an exam but if he's seen the rat recently he often gives me the recheck fee of $40 or so. He'll try to cut deals for us if our bill is going to be very high as well.

$62 for the visit for one rat.  HOWEVER, we ALWAYS take a 'travel companion'.  Sometimes this companion sometimes needs to be listened to, or have a question asked about, but most often, it's just that, a travel companion for the initial rat. We almost always get away with the initial $62 charge, and not charged for the additional rat.

I think rechecks are $45.

Examinations are $38.50 with not discount for multiple rats, however all rechecks, including stitch removal (when necessary) are free.

Wow, I must be lucky.  My vet charges $18.50 for an "exotic animal exam."  The price doesn't change with the number of rats I bring in, either.

Yer spoiled! He doesn't ever not charge if I ask a question about the travel buddy! It's like $37 for rechecks. I ALWAYS pay the rechecks for Leena, cuz she's had that chronic ear infection for over two years now.  Shocked

I've got Malcolm on the small animal plan, though, so his exams are already paid for. I always always have him examined when I bring in Leena. In fact, I'll probably still bring him in frequently for every little thing, just cuz I already paid for it. Tongue

Which vet do you use, since we're in the same area?  When I took Lucy in for her URI, the visit was $78, and it came to $127 including meds.

I just checked my receipt for this thread, and I ended up noticing things that confused me. I guess I hadn't noticed before. I called the vet, and it's better now. I had nothing against the total, I was just confused. So when Francisca went with Mini-K, it was his recheck so I paid a recheck fee of $30.60 for him. I was charged the full office visit of $42.40 for Francisca. When I brought in Tequila and Mudslide, they only charged me $42.40 total, but Mudslide was just there in case it turned out that Tequila had lice because it would mean Mudslide would too. They weighed both of them, but they only checked Tequila and he was fine. I'm told that they usually charge the $42.40 for the first rat and $30.60 for the second, but they might charge full price on both depending on what they do, the problem, and the circumstances.

If I was bringing them in for a checkup, I could see it being around 40 like it is with the cats.  He'd probably discount with more than one, or just lump them together though.  I just got one boy neutered, and he didn't charge for an initial exam.   Smiley

Well, maybe he's changed his policy.  Sad  Except for My Olivia's pneumonia a year ago August, I honestly can't recall the last time I've had to have my rats to the vet. *knocks VERY hard on wood*  When I took her in, she was obviously taken in by herself.

Jenn, who did you take your rats to?  We may have other options for you also.  Wink

My vet charges $45 for the first rat, $35 for additional rats but usually cuts me some sort of deal (not counting a couple of rats or something of that nature) There is also usually a $4.50 poop charge *eyeball roll* only they put that on the first time but no other after I complained about it. They also just do a recheck for me usually since I go there more often then say a person and their dog or cat so yearly I pay them more money. Recheck are $20.

His prices are pretty standard with the other vets if not a bit cheaper in medicine.

My vet charges $36 for a vet visit, which is good for 1-3 rats.  If I bring in more than that, I get charged the "extended" vet visit fee instead, which is $51, and at that I can bring in as many as needed.  I've never gone to a vet that charged me for every individual animal I brought in.  I find that kind of ridiculous, personally  Tongue

Re-checks after surgery or previous treatment are always free.

I get a 10% discount for every visit because of how many pets I bring in to the clinic.  Smiley

Could someone tell me what a recheck is?  Huh

I was told rats only have to go in when they are sick but I am taking them in for a check up just to be on the safe side.  Should they be brought in more often?

A recheck is when the vet has to to see the patient again for some reason or another. A common thing is to be sure that they are cured or if they weren't cured to reassess the problem. My vet does the recheck fee if I've been in there recently as it happens often in rats. Since they have such a short life span a month is almost more than a year to them and a lot can change health wise in a short time causing me to go to the vet more often then my other animals. So my vet just charges the recheck fee if I've been there recently instead of the whole vet visit.

I want to live where Scubbs vet is O_O Only, if most vets charge that much I don't think I will be paid that well as a tech there lol.

I use Dr. Patt at Alta Mesa Animal Hospital.  http://www.altamesaanimalhospital.com/

Here is her website: http://www.littlecrittersvet.com/

I liked her and she seemed experienced with rats, but it was kind of expensive.

A recheck is when you bring them in again after the initial visit if an issue crops up/first problem isn't resolved.  For instance with neutering, you could bring them in again if you think something's up, or say with one of the cats I have, I usually bring him in again after surgery to make sure his stitches are dissolving correctly(he was in a couple times a year for abscesses before I learned to take care of them myself).

I pay $55 exam fee.  There are no discounts for multiple rats, if I bring in two it is 55 x 2.  The only exception was when the problem was just lice, and she just had to weigh the other ones she only charged one exam fee.  A recheck is $40, but sometimes they will okay a refill over the phone, sometimes they insist on the physical recheck.  Depends on the problem.  If the recheck only takes two seconds (checking to make sure an abscess was gone "yep, good to go") she didn't charge me at all.  She isn't going to give her services away for free, but she is fair.

At my vet I think it's $55 for one, $35 for any additional (they charge for every one).  After neuters the rechecks are included (even when Tango had to go back like 4 times because it wasn't healing right).  I've never brought a redneck to the vet, so I'm not sure on that one.  Cheeky
