Welcome and thanks for meeting my neighbor's surprise bubs.

Mommy came home with me when we learned she was pregnant.  At first, I was just excited to see the birth, development, and socializing of the little guys.  My neighbor and I agreed that she would still be responsible.  (Her unplanned litter.  As things go, she was just tested positive for skin cancer.  Though it was caught earily and medically looks good, it is her third time to need to have something removed.  I know this to be deeply emotional for her.  Well, I'm in a better position to help find homes -- for now!)   Heart

The babies were born November 3rd in the afternoon.  Their socialization began November 4th with full milk bands.

All babies are taken out each day and played with individually for about 15 minutes.  I'm petting them, humming to them next to my cheek, and developing trust and affection for BELLYFLOPS.  At 4 days old, some can move already and come towards my voice.  They get more active and colorful skin when I hum to them.  Several TREMBLE THEIR TAILS WITH BELLYRUBS!

Here are some pictures of how it is being developed.  First, it is to their side with feet touching something.  Then feet not touching anything, and lastly the full bellyflop.  I'm finding side sleepers and bellyfloppers in the nest at eating time.

These babies are also blessed with an attentive mommy with lots of licking and an abundance of milk for these fully packed sausages.

I'll be investing a wealth of time into their socialization to be loving, loving pets.  At a time unknown yet, the responsibility of finding homes for remaining babies may go back to their owner when she is recovered.  For now, I can act as their owners.

Both parents are healthy, loved pets.

Updated 11/20: $7 for one or $12 for two.  $5 for each additional rat.  Pricing is set to be above feeder pricing, but not to profit from the bubs.  Hope this sounds reasonable and fair for very loved little ones.

Updated 11/20: I won't be handing back responsibility to my neighbor.  I love these little ones and want to see them go to good homes.

Please see how strong these little ones are at 4 days old!

Bellyflopping Training.  Here is what they look like after a belly rub!  VERY ENJOYED!

I am going to meet with a more experienced person to help determine gender and do individual pictures when they have furr.  I've only adopted males that were uhm goolified already.

Will be happy to post genders and updated photos when knowing more.  Hoping for now that some people might start thinking if there is room in their heart and home for these little guys.

The 5th from the left and the one on the very far right I'm interested in knowing genders on. I want only females as I just got my 2 boys neutered. I'm 5.5 hours away but me and my dog love road trips so I'd be willing to drive it (or if you can drive a little to meet us that'd help).

Heather, yes, I'm sure we can work something out.

Jellybean, sounds like a wonderful plan and thank you for the email.  Really glad to see you planning with being new to rats.  The most common misconceptions of new owners are cage size, wire spacing on cage, bedding, food, and how wonderfully social little ratties are.  The first cage I bought is now our pet carrier  -- underestimated how they thrive with space.

MaevePotter: Yes, both parents are top ears.  With ear placement looking identical across the babies, I think we can say all are top ears.

QUICK NOTE:  First choices will be made to those that express earily interest.  Those choices can change when gender, color, health, and personality are better known.  Would appreciate email addresses sent to me with phone numbers for when this time comes.  My email is csg013@yahoo.com

I've studied this link:  http://www.ratz.co.uk/sexingrats.html

An expert is coming on Sunday.  My initial identifications may change after that....

Here are some personality notes, that I'll try to keep updated.  As bubs started making hungry noises, those with no notes were in the middle of the ratty pile!  These are going from left to right in the first group photos.  Have a commitment for help sexing the bubs on Sunday.  Please take my identifications lightly until then.

1) Crossroad.  Girl.  EASY GOING!  Wow, she goes along with anything.  Really likes bellyrubs.  No reaction to feet not touching.  Only baby to relax while checking her privates so far.

2) Tonka.  Boy.  Climbs and digs.  Melts when being petted.  No bellyflops.  Looks to be a future manly buck in build.

3) Topaz.  Boy.   Calm.  Topaz was hungry so many times, it was hard to learn his personality.  When hungry, he thinks of food and that includes searching hands.  Tonight, he wasn't hungry!  Might be a bellyflopper after all.  He layed on his side both with me and in his litter.

4) Isis - girl.  Right eye looks like the eye of Isis.  In Egyptian lore, this was used to ward off illness and evil!  She was too hungry to show personality tonight.  She isn't getting as much food as the other babies and seems a little behind the others right now.

5) Platinum- girl.  Calm, gentle love.  Super relaxed even upside down if feet are touching something.  MORE BELLYRUBS PWEESE.

6) Sunflare-Girl. Markings have curly flare.  Plump cuddler.  No bellyflops.  Curls tail in a prissy position.

7) Maracas.  Girl.  TREMBLES tail with bellyrubs.  She has a very high interest in people.  I think she will develop a deep bond with her owner.  If she was a boy, she wouldn't be available for adoption!

Cool T Bone- Boy. In perfect block font.  Melts when petted.  Might be a bellyflopper--growing less resistive to the idea.

9) Mini-me - boy.  Active.Melts with petting and will stop for pets.  No bellyflops.  Siloutte looks like a rat on head!

10) Yertle.  Boy.  Turtle marking

11) Silouette- Boy.  Marking of girl in dress

12) Fudge - Boy. Marking of girl in dress.  Thought this outfit was *going* to look good.  Think again!

13) Pure Blaze -girl.  Talks back to kissy noises.  It has the rhythm of a conversation!  Sweet little squeaks after I kiss her back.  No bellyflops please.

14) Spot -boy.  Round patch on right eye.  This strip through top of head.

Adopt and save a life

« Reply #18 on: November 10, 2007, 08:46:51 PM »

How cute! Forgive my ignorance, but what are bellyflops? I'd love to have a mellow girl, but I think I am too far away (PA). I currently have 2 young females - one rescued feeder rat, and another adopted from an oops litter. I spend a lot of time with them, but they are more interested in running around than cuddling (I know - it's a girl thing). I'd love to have a cuddler!

LOL.  Bellyflops are when a rat will lay on his back for a bellyrub.  It takes developing a great deal of trust because they can't run (their top defense) until they flip over.

A friend/co-worker has family in PA and will probably see family over the holidays.  As he is *not* a rat person, would probably need to meet him right away....

If Topaz doesn't want him because he's a boy.. I *might* be interested... I'd have to run it by the boyfriend though..

Wow - that would be wonderful if transportation could be arranged. It sounds like Platinum or Crossroad would have the personality I am looking for. I'm getting all excited just thinking about it!!!! I'll be as helpful as I can to the transporter. angel8
