rosie, my rescue girl who spent the 1st year of her life on cedar shavings and eating bird seed mix, isn't doing well.  she has scrapes on the inside of her front legs and is moving very slowly. she's not dehydrated and she ate a half a jar of baby food (watered down a bit.) could she be blind? that may count for the movement issues.  i've just moved her and her sister lucyhoney into a single level cage and she seems to be doing better.  i know this is kind of a pointless post, but i'm worried.
*the vet isn't open and the e-vt doesn't see anything but cats and dogs, so a vet check isn't possible until wednesday*

eta: she's almost stumbling/dragging her feet and she seems uncoordinated--stroke? breathing is ok, heart sounds normal.

Oh boy.She must be having a rough time.
My guess is that it might be a virus. This happened to Willa, well it was quite similar. Undecided
How old is she? Perhaps it's her age?
Or,maybe she is going blind...I should hope not.

Is she able to hold her food? Could be a pituitary tumour?  Undecided

Being blind wouldn't likely cause her much problem as rats have very poor eyesight to begin with and don't really rely on it. My first thought when you said she had scratches was mites, but with the last comments, I'm thinking you're either correct on the stroke idea, or possibly an inner ear infection or PT tumor?

Moving her to a single level cage is a very good idea. Sounds like, for now, she's hydrated okay. The baby food is also a good idea. I'd make sure she has some fleece and another rat to help her stay warm. Unless you have some meds on hand like prednisone or baytril, I think that's all you can do for now. I'll keep my fingers crossed for her.

she has only been ill with symptoms today.  she can hold her food, but when she grooms herself she looks like she's sitting back in a chair.   scout, i do have baytril!  she is in the cage with her sister lucyhoney who now grooms her after her meals.  the cage has eco-bedding and fleece.

Is she struggling to use her back feet? One of my girls got hind leg degeneration and would sit and groom herself like you described. If she's dragging herself along a bit it might explain the scrapes on her arms

Hmmm...definitely sounds neurological.  Is she confused rather than acting blind...the head moving aimlessly at times?
Is she standing with her weight on her butt and her front limbs pushed forward?

I have both a PT girl here and a stroke girl right now (double whammy in my home), the stroke girl was very sudden, has head tilt, definite weakness on one side (one front paw doesn't grasp), and she responded slowly to steroids/abs.  The PT girl came around a lot faster and is now relatively normal and much more alert.

If you don't have meds/steroids, or metacam, you could try liquid infant's advil/motrin/ibuprofen...its an anti-inflammatory that might bring down some of the swelling in her brain.

lilspaz, thanks for responding!  she doesn't seem like she's confused and she seems to be standing with her weight roughly centered.  it's when she moves that the problems begin--it's almost as though her legs won't move like she wants them to and   when she walks they (all four) almost curl under her.  she is eating and drinking if it's from a plate she doesn't seem able to sit to drink out of a bottle.  i will go out to get some infants advil/ibuprofen/motrin to start immedately.  i hope something's open.

I hope it helps things out until you are able to get her to your vet.  Doesn't sound like PT or stroke, maybe osteoarthritis or spinal nerve degen?  The ibuprofen should help a little.

Good luck Noki, and Rosie!!!

well, she's had her ibuprofen as of 1130 pm.  she has the berry flavour and she took it with tropical fruit smoothie.  she has eaten almost a whole jar of baby food tonight.

when shadow got sick she lost moment in her front feet. the doctor had her on 2 anti bio and steroids to help get her stronger. After fighting the viruses she became blind. If you rat moves her head all around most up till it can't go any farther and seems to be very confused that she could be blind. Its some kind of virus that is attacking her system, you should do what you can but get her to the vet fast, sometimes it only takes 3 days,

well, she made it through the night.  she had her motrin (with fruit smoothie) and her food then shared more food with her sister.  she seems? to be walking a bit better.  just put it this way when i tried to get video of her she kept scampering off.

Wonderful news Nokithis!!!!  I am sure that the Ibu is helping the stiffness and her mobility.  Pain management can be a wonderful thing at times.  Smiley

Ratkippy, it sounds like your girl had PT or a stroke, not a virus. All the symptoms you describe sound neurological especially with the addition of the steroids.

The vet didn't have time to offically find out what it was but we believe it was attacking the neurological system and we know it was not a stroke

rosie took a turn for the worse and i don't think she's going to make it.  i took a short video of her, but she was reluctant to move.

im not sure if she is blind just yet. Shadow basically went where i went in a carrier and would  sleep in a bed. She is must be so tired from fighting the virus. As she gets better it will be easier to tell.

That does seem neurological.  If she makes it until you can get to your vet, see if you can get abs (baytril) and a steroid (oral prednisone)...unless she's just ill like pneumonia...are her lungs still clear?

I am so sorry Noki. Sad

ok, well last night i gave rosie baytil.  one of the rattie people told me i could bring rosie there (120 miles) and she would check her out.  once we were there, rosie starts acting better, but she could see neuro issues so she gave her a shot of dexamethasone and she acted even better.  i took her (rosie) to the rattie vet first thing this morning.  she most likely has a tumor and he suspects either a PT or somewhere around the optic nerve.  she has baytril and pred now and she is doing better.  hopefully this will give us a little more quality time together

thanks everyone!  my christmas was a bit rosie-r!

Dex and baytril could make her much more comfy and give you longer with her.  I am glad your Christmas ended up a bit better.  Cheesy
