Rats Rock!

The Rat Genome Database chose Alanya to be in their Year of the Rat calendar. She is the only non lab rat in the calendar and was chosen for her unusual spontaneous marking mutation. I am just so proud of her. I got my copies in the mail on Monday and I wanted to share!

She is just such a gorgeous girl!  Congrats to the young urban ratty girl on the go!

Annie in Norway

PS Have you bred her to see if the marking mutation is passed on or is hers some sort of teratogenic non-genetic coat mutation?  Whatever, she's gorgeous.. LOVE it! =)

ETA I see you have bred her =)  Are you getting anything like her from the F2?  Really neat colours! Reminds me a lot of coat colours you get in cats, blue-cream/tortoiseshell etc...

Oooh, I want the festively candy-colored rat!

She's adorable.  I bet she's the prettiest girl in the calendar!

She needed to be bred to a son, but our breedable male offspring from her came to late. We have seen some splotching in the offspring and F2 generation. But nothing as remarkable as Alanya.
We will be able to proceed with  an offspring breeding (brother/sister) soon. That may give us the coat mutation. So far offspring have only been bred back to Jace.

Her and Jace's (sire/mate) karyotypes are archived now via the molecular genetics department at RADIL, which is kinda cool. She is a wonderful girl. She is very calm and sweet. She is a long and sturdy female. Her non-pregnant weight is  15.8 ounces.

Here are a few more photos of Alanya. She was only a few months old in the calander shot.

She's so pretty. I love her markings. I don't think I've ever seen a rat with such unusual markings.

Your rats have the most lovely faces/expressions- photographs are always outstanding Bella. I noticed that about our Tedy- it is difficult to take a bad photo of him Smiley

Thanks Paula!
Tedy is from the Am. Mink/Am. Blue line. They are really cute ratties. Much nicer ears than the Russian Blue/Burmese line that Alanya and Jace are from.
  I love them all though!

Wow! Congratulations! That's terrific you got her in the genome calendar and you have her karyotypes on record. We'll forever be able to trace her offspring! When you say Jace is the mate/sire, do you also mean he is her sire, or that he's the sire of the litter?

Now when are you going to submit her picture for the Rats Rule calendar? Hmmm???

Both. He is her daddy and her bebes daddy too. Not everyone understands, but inbreeding is an important aspect of breeding rats (as are line breeding and out-crossing).

Calendar submissions are usually open in July and August. It's the first item when you come to the forum home page. Here's a link. I'll try to remember to remind you when the time comes (although I missed the voting this year).

And for pete's sake, go ahead and post Jace's christmas portrait. It's never too late for good pictures!

Here is Jace's Christmas portrait, as requested ......

Very cool that Alanya made the calendar!

And I adore that Jace video.  All your rats are so photogenic...  I've still not had any luck in getting good pics of my girls.  They refuse to stand still!  It's going to be time for their spays soon, I'll have to have you get some pics of them before they go under the knife...  Wink

Yes, but genetically photogenic does not make up for a crappy camera!  LOL

We're figuring on doing their spays as soon as the tax money comes in, which is usually right around the first of February.  Gonna call Dr. Mac, and have him do them, since it's cheaper to drive up there than it is to have any of our vets do it locally...  How sick is that?

Possibly Paula! LOL

We still have a few more months to plan. There will be another Mink/blue line breeding by then, possibly a blue dalmatian breeding, and likely a russian blue breeding from the foundation line.

My current Burmese litter that is on the site is so tiny! Only four pups from Jace and Jayla. there are three Burmese in the litter and a Siamese. Those are some FAT babies, I do need to get baby photos up!

Bella

PS. Scout ... bring it on! You would love Florida. It is very ratty here!
