Saved a rat from snake food...HELP!!!!

Hey guys,
I just adopted two more ratties. One is a baby beige boy with red eyes. He has some diareah and is sleeping alot so he is in QT for a week or so then he will be in with my boys....BUT....I had not inteded on ever getting a female, but she is surely preggy(she has a fat belly and her nipples are showing) They were both in ten gallon tanks with many more rats, no food, cedar chips....awaiting to be dinner for a sneaky little snake!!! I had to bring her home, she looked at me, climbed my arm, as to say Pll...ee..aa..ss..ee! I need to know what in the world to do...I have never had a preg rat before...and should I get her a female friend?
...she has her own cage!!!

Well,I've never had a preg. rat before, but congrats on saving her!
Well, anyways how well can she walk? Do you have shavings as bedding?
If so,I'd suggest switching it to a towel,or a soft blanket. I don't think she'll need another rat
with her,in fact it may be good for her to be by herself.
Maybe someone else can be of more help. Good luck!

Don't get her a friend. She sounds like she's ready to pop any day. Consider keeping 1 or 2 of her female babies to keep her company.
Give her lots of nesting materials. Shredded paper towels work wonderfully. I also like to provide mine with a private place to give birth. It can be as simple as a shoebox turned upside down with a decent sized hole cut in the side. She can probably give birth in the 10 gallon, but will quickly outgrow it as the babies become more mobile.
Give her a diet rich in proteins while she's carrying and nursing. Eggs and bits of chicken are good. Hard kitten food is also high in protein. I like to buy a can of powdered soy baby formula and mix some up once a day. It's full of vitamins, fluids, and proteins.
Good luck. Others here will give you some more advice. I just scraped the surface.

Her nipples are so pronounced, and she has that sort of "rounded" look. Pregnant. That's my opinion.
When the babies are born, myself and many others will be able to offer a great deal of help
Keep her warm for now, is she in her own room?
Anyway you can post a thread in the "Adoption" bit of Goosemoose, so you can get homes for them.
I agree not to get her a friend.
Def
wait 'till after the kittens are born, if you plan on getting her one.
You could always keep a few from the litter?
The cage looks nice, though it looks like you are using CareFresh? Not a problem, except it can produce, like many other beddings alike, mites.
Nasty nasty things
Good luck, if you need any help ask, or PM me (private message.)
Happy New Year!

Very cute little lady! Her marking is in the 'high white' range, so when bubs are born, be very watchful for abnormally distended or lumpy baby bellies, as megacolon is a possibility. She does not need a friend right now, but you should keep a female baby or two as a companion for her when the time comes.
The little boy is also very cute. A proper quarantine is a minimum of three weeks AFTER any symptoms of illness have resolved, and should be done in a separate airspace from any other rats. Also, his eyes seem to be pink, not red- so rather than a beige, you are the proud owner of a Champagne or Amber rat, depending upon whether he is Agouti or Self based! He does not look ticked to me, so I'd say he is a Champagne.
Did you see the father of the babies at all?

It is hard to say for sure, but many rats do not show much until they are about ready to deliver. My guess is 3-5 days out at the most. It is time to start supplementing her diet with high protein foods to help with milk production. A scrambled egg with a little olive oil is wonderful- feed about 1 1/2 tablespoons per day of scrambled egg. Chocolate soymilk can be offered to lap from a dish, and is a favorite treat. Fresh kale helps keep the Vitamin K up, which assists in blood clotting- important to stop the bleeding on time after delivery- but not too much, as it contains an acid that interferes with absorbing calcium. Some canned oysters or a little cooked beef liver will provide B-vitamins.
Babies will be able to easily escape that cage when they are born and start to be mobile. I would start looking for a nursery cage with smaller bar spacing now, although it will probably be 3 weeks until you really need it.

Okay, I looked up pics of pregnant ratties on google and she isnt as huge as any of them, I also cannot palpate the babies. Maybe she is just fat... are nipples visable if they aren't pregnant. She does eat ALOT and sleeps when not eating, but hasnt started making a nest.
Here are some more pics to help:

She looks far less pregnant in the second set of pics. Nipples do show when not pregnant, but they are not as prominent by far. Give it some time- if in 21 days you do not have babies, time to get her (and quarantine properly of course) a female friend!

If she was in with males for more than a couple of hours, you can be just about certain she is pregnant. Maybe you will luck out and she is not.

If she is not showing too much, she might have a small number of babies inside her. The range is 1-20 babies, really (1 & 20 being extremes).

Congrats on your new ratties!!
As previously mentioned you will need to give your girl good healthy nutritious food and extra protein.
I would strongly suggest good quality lab blocks such as Harlan, baby cereal (such as Nestle mixed cereals with fruit, baby cereal), the baby cereal can be mixed up with water, soy milk or soy baby formula, a bit of cooked egg occasionally, vegs such as peas, and fruit .
In the future, when babies are old enough to wean, they will start eating the baby cereal, etc. with their mom.

I have another question.... There is a beige female rattie that is 4-5 mo old near where I love that needs to be rehomed. I have doubled in my original number in 2 days...but...
She is free to a good home, should I adopt her....
Or wait??
Oh and while I am asking questions- I feed my ratties oatmeal, uncooked pasta, dried bananas, dried pumpkin seeds, Mazuri lab block, Lettuce, carrots, cabbage, mustard greens, apples, and then my maybe preg female all of that and baby cereal... Is that a decent diet???
I have done ALOT of research, and read books, but I like to be well informed....

I would hold-off on adopting more. You might just be surprised with 3-15 more, shortly
.
The fresh diet sounds great, but what do you feed as a mix? Oh, you should also cook the "mommy" up an egg and give her meat...she needs the protein!

The swelling looks like she is pregnant to me- a pregnant girl's vulva will swell a bit.
Hold off on adopting another rat. You do not want to do QT on ANOTHER rat while you are waiting for babies, and if she transmitted anything to the momma, babies could be born very sick.
The diet sounds good, but I would replace the lettuce with Bok Choy- lettuce has very little nutrition and is mostly water, while Bok Choy provides some excellent nutrients. Most King Soopers carry it. It is also sometimes called Chinese Cabbage. Also, do add some extra protein to the expecting mommy's diet.

I forgot about that, I did scramble her an egg last night, she had a little last night and a little tonight!!! Sorry forgot about the egg!! I am kinda hoping she is pregnant, and at the same time hoping she isn't. Either way...she is here to stay she is the sweetest rat I have ever seen. I still havent found a name for her, or my little beige/champaigne boy yet!!
And I am confused ...some ways I look at her she looks preggy, then some ways, she don't ....we will see!! Thanks for the advice, I will just hold off...if no babies in 2-3 weeks I will get her a friend!!
