Yes. When I fostered a litter I got a nice chomp from momma the day before she delivered. Give her some paper towels to shred and some yummy tidbits to snack on, dim the lights, make sure cage is clean and food and water are full, and leave her alone for a while. You will know if there are babies, trust me- no need to disturb her to check visually. They are LOUD!

Good luck! I adopted a pregnant girl from a pet store a few years ago (she had 16 babies) and it was quite an experience! There's nothing like seeing those little pinks worms grow into adorable, friendly, loyal pets! I'm sure you will provide a great, loving home!

I am so very confused!!! My female (whose name is now Gabby) was out exploring when I got home this evening, so I got her out. She crawled around on me...so maybe the biting was just because she was scared....who knows. She is really not that big....but looks kinda pregnant.... I wish I could know for sure!!! It is killing me, if she isnt preg, I want to her her a friend and if she is preg I want to make sure I do everything I can to help her...(protein, nesting material, privacy, etc)....I listened to her abdomen with a stethoscope and I didn't hear anything!!!

more pics...

You could neuter the boy too and keep them together eventually (:

It can be hard to tell  Tongue.

I would leave her be for a while, though. Just in case you are always playing with her...she may hold in her babies until she feels it is comfortable to give birth.

IMHO, which is worth exactly what you paid for it   she is pregnant- she was in with males too long not to be, if she is fertile, and there is no good reason a girl that young would be infertile. Just relax and give her some love and some privacy, and watch for signs of nesting- if she suddenly starts shredding everything in the cage and dragging it into her hut, she may be getting ready. The weight gain you are describing also sounds like pregnancy. If she is not very far along, then all the better- you have time to make friends with her before she pops, so she will hopefully be more relaxed about the daily socializing you'll be doing with the babies.

the largest litter i've ever seen was 25  your boy seems to be a bareback (same as one of my girls) and he is adorable! are you keeping her in a cage or tank? i've been told they should be in tanks to avoid injuries (falling etc) or babies through the bars, good luck, i hope she's preggers, little rittens are so cute!

You are joking aren't you Queen Rat?

First litters are supposed to be small?   Roll Eyes  Some one should have told Sal that.

My pet shop girl Sal was nipping and mouthing for the day before she gave birth.  Give her some time to herself, don't take her out, give her some yummies and see how she goes.

Yup, sounds like time to get ready for babies! Let us know how it goes. When you hear eeping, resist the urge to bother Mom- give her several hours to get to know them, then lure her out into another cage (if you have another one available) or onto a safe surface and inspect the nest to make sure all the babies have milk bands. Milk bands are white stripes on their tummies where you can see into their bellies and see milk- that means she is feeding them all. Just make sure they all have all their parts and are eating for the first day- give it a couple days before you worry about checking ear types or socializing or sexing or any of that.

lol

thirds that.

You may want to incvest in some gardening gloves just in case she stays nippy.  Once she hass some mum time, you may need to give the cage a spot clean and mama probably isn't going to like it.

Today she weighs 10.9 only 1 oz since yesterday, she is extremely nippy, she won't let me get near her today!! She doesn't seem any bigger, and she has alot of energy....just very moody, and she destroyed her nest and has made her litter box her new bed!!! I don't know....

Just relax! If she's going to have babies, she'll either do it on her own when she's ready, or you will KNOW there is something wrong. Most rats deliver just fine on their own schedules. If not, you'll know in a few weeks.

With all due respect, while baby rats are cute, do you realize how many neglected, abused, unwanted rats there are? There's rats in shelters. Pregnant rats in shelters. I think it would be much better to adopt one of them than to wish pregnancy on a young rat just because baby rats are "cute".

If anything, we should wish that she's not pregnant, I think that would be better for all parties.
