Update LI Rats EMERGENCY IMMEDIATE ATTENTION PLEASE CROSSPOST
«

Here's the situation. I was forwarded a post someone made on craigslist advertising rats. It ran as follows, "all sizes frozen and live 1.00 and up xxxl frozen 3.50 also rodent rack holds 30 cages 450 takes it away breed your own rats." The pictures were heartbreaking. I contacted this person via email and he agreed to meet me in a store parking lot. At the meeting he pulled a plastic tub out of his trunk and threw it on the ground. The rats looked frightened to death. I told him I was hoping to "pick my own" as I only wanted girls. He let me follow him home and brought me to a shed in back of his house. You can't begin to imagine what I saw. A filthy, stinky shed, racks with drawers full of rats, an overcrowded tank on the floor, a rabbit in a tank in the corner and strange noises coming from the adjacent wall (which I wasn't allowed to see). Every drawer in the racks had at least one litter and a few adults, no rats were separated by sex. He seemed very nervous, wouldn't answer any questions and pretty much wanted me to pick out some rats and go. I pulled 20 rats total. I'm looking to adopt and foster these rats, call animal control, have him shut down and pick up the rest. The ones I have now are no older than 5 months, the youngest being 4 weeks. I put the pictures of his craigslist ad in my photobucket, as the original post was taken down.
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/reskuez/LI%20Rescue/
I'm taking pictures of the ones I have and photos will be posted in my photobucket no later than tomorrow morning. I will also notify the groups when the pictures are up. I would like to have the possible pregnant mothers spayed as soon as possible. I am located on Long Island (Nassau County, NY). Transport can be worked out. Please contact me off the groups at
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
If we all pull together we can save these rats. I'm estimating he has at the least 400. Before I call animal control I'd like to set up some homes and fosters. I gave away all my cages and supplies, took in two of the Colbrook rats who didn't work out with their adopter, and have 8 rescue girls of my own I'm caring for. Let's please at least try! -Luna
The list is as follows:
Girls
1 Agouti (pregnant) approximately 5 months
1 Black dumbo (possibly pregnant) approx. 3.5 months
2 Agouti hood dumbo (possibly pregnant) approx. 4 & 5 months
1 Light brown approx. 3 months
2 Agouti hood approx. 4 weeks
2 Black berkshire approx. 2.5 months
1 Agouti hood approx. 2.5 months
1 Agouti approx 5 months
2 Russian blue hood approx. 4 weeks
1 Light brown dumbo (possibly pregnant) approx. 3 months
3 Pew approx. 3-5 months
Boys
2 Russian blue dumbo approx. 4 weeks
1 Russian blue approx 3.5-4 months

Where are you located? I don't suppose anybody could get the poor things to Texas.

She posted in the second paragraph "I am located on Long Island (Nassau County, NY). Transport can be worked out. Please contact me off the groups at
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
"
it states her location and maybe that any further contact re: adopting rats should be via email, or it seems that way.
I do wonder if something can be worked out with MRR and their upcoming rat train to NY being worked also in reverse to get some of these up to the MA/NH/ME/RI areas.
Luna, if you return here your post covered all bases and I am just wondering what their health is like, if you plan on returning to this guy to get more, when you say spayed does this mean you are going to have them spayed and then place them is it a suggesting to the potential adopters?

I'm located in Nassau County on Long Island. That's New York.
Ratzilla,
Who is MRR? How can I get in contact with them? I'd like to have the females spayed before they give birth, then place them. I know Kim from Kim's Ark is doing neuters for Sharry (Colbrook Rats) & I was hoping she would help me with spays. There's also a rat show in NJ later this month I was hoping I could take some to. I'd like to set up homes and fosters before I contact animal control and the usda (I was tipped off he needs a license to breed & I doubt he has one).

ps. They all seem in good health.

Hi, sorry about that, it is the acronym for Mainelyratrescue run by 4 women the email listed is
info@mainelyratrescue.org
here is their website
http://mainelyratrescue.org/rattieblog2/
here is the post noting the upcoming NY/Long Island rat train (this has emails for kimmyizme and paula-two of the 4 mentioned above)
http://www.goosemoose.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,118/forum,rat/topic,4034014.0
I think both MRR and Kims Ark both do great things getting rats into good homes. Kudos to you for taking this guy on and working it out for the rats benefit instead of just reacting!! I'm looking forward to seeing pics of your new rescues and hopefully seeing some for adoption in our area up here (MA/NH)

Good news, the 3 boys are being transported tonight. I'm bringing them to someone I know in NYC. I posted more pix in my photobucket of the girls I have, here's the link again
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/reskuez/LI%20Rescue/
The original pictures of the craigslist ad are still there so everyone can see the severity of the rats this man has. I will be contacting animal control and the usda tomorrow. I've contacted 2 vets to handle the spays that I'm waiting to hear back from. I will take as many rats as I can fit here when they're confiscated. My paypal address is
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
Any donations, especially cages and supplies are welcome. Please email me off list at the same email address.

Our funds are low (both rescue wise and personally because of the rescue!), but we'd like to send cages and supplies (we have many water bottles [without hooks, I'm sorry to say!] and other assorted goodies) that are used, may be chewed some, but will be clean your way. I have an adopter that is coming to Ohio on Saturday. She is from the north west end of New York state (Ontario, NY). She is willing to bring the items back with her, if there's anyway to get them from her location to you. If anyone can help with this, let me know... Rattie Love Rescue would love to help in this way!

Can't you call the human society or something to get this person locked up. There has to be some kind of law against this.

LI RATS EMERGENCY UPDATE PLEASE READ & CROSSPOST

Reply #9 on:

I contacted the SPCA. An investigation will be done today and I should be hearing from the investigating officer soon. They are aware I'm willing to take the rats when/if confiscated and place them. I'd like to have the ones here placed asap to make room. Anyone who has responded to adoption & foster, please fill out the applications I sent and email them back to me asap. I need to keep track of who wants what and where they're going. I also need to know who can help with transport. If the rats can be picked up here or in close proximity to me to be transported that would be very helpful. As well as cage donations, if the cages can be brought to me or shipped this would utilize my time better for the rats and getting everything in order. There are hundreds so I hope everyone understands, I will do my best to pick up supplies and transport as much and as far as I can. Please contact me offlist because I have little time to check the boards. There will be many litters and pregnant mothers so those willing to take in these cases please mention that specifically in your email and adoption form. More pictures and info to come soon. Here is the link to my photobucket.
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/reskuez/LI%20Rescue/
It must be copy and pasted in full or else the link will not work. Thanks for your support!

I heard from the investigating officer and was told when they arrived nothing was found. The officer said the property was clear. All evidence of ANY animals previously there had already been discarded. Because there was no evidence at the time of inspection, they cannot charge him and cannot confiscate what's not there. He was tipped off and covered his tracks but this does not necessarily mean he's off the hook. This is all the information I can publically offer but I do want to add, the matter will be investigated further. I still have rats needing homes so please contact me off-list for adoption or foster information at

I also want to add that I have received some donations since making the posts. I appreciate everything and thank everyone. I do not need any further donations at this time. I plan to use what I've received so far towards further transports and spays. I also have two other rescues needing tumor removals. If you have donated to me and would like to retract your donation, please conact me off-list at

Yesterday one of the little albino girls had a litter of 9, 3 boys and 6 girls, from what I can tell. They all have black eyes which means they're not pews. Please go to this link to see pictures of the ratties currently available for adoption, as well as the mom and her babies.
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/rescue%20ratties/
If you cannot access the link by clicking on it, then copy and paste the entire URL in your browser, it will end with a back-slash after the word ratties. Please contact me off-list at
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
for additional information. I am located in Nassau County on Long Island (NY). Transports are available. I will be making a transport myself to Mt. Pocono, PA on 2/29, this Friday and Westport, CT in the near future. Thanks for your time and support.

More Babies Please Read

Two of the younger rats I rescued on February 16th had litters. I had suspicions about the 4 dumbos and 1 agouti but these recent pregnancies were a complete surprise as both girls are so young. One had 6 girls and 3 boys, Tuesday February 25th. Her babies will be ready for adoption March 17th. The other had 5 girls and 2 boys, Monday March 3rd. Her babies will be ready for adoption March 31st. There are 17 girls currently up for adoption, 11 of those are babies, and there are 5 baby boys. Pictures can be seen at:

Please contact me off-list at
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
for adoption, foster and transport. I've been working on putting together a map for group members to join, to get a better idea of where people are located and how to better coordinate transports but I'm having some difficulty. If anyone is familiar with maps and can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. I'm seeking one that's free. I'm very low on funds, having spent much on vet care, medication and traveling expenses, doing a majority of my own transports for the rats I was able to place since the rescue. I still have one rat awaiting surgery for a tumor removal. In saying that, I'm open to accepting donations of food, bedding (carefresh) and/or monetary. If you cannot help with adoption, foster or transport, please consider sending a monetary donation via paypal to
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
I would have a fundraiser but I have nothing to give, I'm sorry. I want to stress, my main concern is finding homes for these rats! I've had people respond then reneg or simply not follow up. Please take a look at their pictures and crosspost this message freely (anywhere but craigslist).
Thanks so much for your time and support,

Hi Everyone!
Updated pix of the babies are up!
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/rescue%20ratties/
The first litter (6 girls, 3 boys) was born on February 26th and will be ready for adoption March 25th as will their mom (PEW). The second litter (5 girls, 2 boys) was born on March 3rd and will be ready for adoption March 31st as will their mom (Mink/Dove). The current adults available for adoption are 2 pew girls, 1 agouti girl, and 1 blaze brown cap girl. This makes a total of 22 rats up for adoption. Please take a look at the link above to see pictures. I'm also looking for a transport leg from Westport, CT to southern MA or Manchester, NH. 4 of the baby girls will be on their way to their forever home soon =) I'm also looking for transports to Columbus, OH.
I am located in Nassau County, Long Island, NY. Please contact me off-list for more information as I have little time to check the boards. Thanks so much!

I just received a phonecall from my foster. One of her foster girls had a litter of 10 babies today. She's in Syracuse, NY. Would anyone be willing to foster this mom and litter? She's only a student, the rat is 2 months old =(

Howdy Pratz (parents of ratz =)
I updated pictures in my photobucket earlier today. Here is the link: (it ends with ratties/)
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/rescue%20ratties/
I'm happy to say most of the babies from the first litter are placed, so I removed their pictures. Two Agouti Hooded baby girls and their Pew mum remain available for adoption. The babies will be 4 weeks old on March 25th. The second litter will be 4 weeks old on March 31st. There are 5 girls, 2 boys and their Dove mum. There appears to be 1 Black, 3 Russian Blue and 1 Dove colored of the girls. The 2 boys seem Dove as well. The other rattie girls are as follows: 2 Agouti, 2 Pew & 1 Brown Cap. I'm also seeking permanent adoption for my foster ratties. The first group are 3 young girls in Syracuse, NY. They can be seen in the first photo (Black Berkshire, Black Hooded & Agouti Hooded). The second group is a Pew mum with a litter of 7 who are now located in Binghamton, NY. I'm waiting on a sex count but they all appear to have black eyes. They were born Saturday, March 8th and will be fully weaned April 5th.
For those who don't know, April 4th is considered World Rat Day (a holiday to honor and promote pet rats). I plan to attend two events this year, the celebration in Pittsburgh, PA on March 30th and the celebration in Vernon, CT on April 5th. With permission I may be able to meet adopters at the events or on the way to. Please contact me off-list for adoption info at
rattie_beanez@yahoo.com
Thanks so much for your help and support!
Hugs,

Pardon the redundancy of my post but I'm still seeking homes for a number of rescues. The babies from the second litter opened their eyes yesterday. Now that they've matured a bit their coloring is more distinct. To see updated photos please go to
http://s121.photobucket.com/albums/o224/rattie_beanez/rescue%20ratties/
For anyone seeking adoption but feel I am too far there are a few transports in order. One will be going from Long Island to Vermont on March 28th, stops include CT, MA & NH. One will be going from Long Island to South East PA on March 30th or 31st, stops include multiple areas in NJ and Philadelphia. An additional trip from Long Island to Vernon, CT will be made on April 5th. I'm also trying to coordinate a trip to Pittsburgh at the moment. Therefore, if you live along these routes, transport may be possible.
The following is a list of the rescues I have for adoption:
Dove Mom (approx. 4 months)
5 Baby Girls (4 weeks March 31st)
1 Black Berkshire
3 Agouti
1 Dove
