On what kind of a surface?  Basically, I'm trying to figure out the best way to give them outside the cage time without getting urine or poop on my bed.  I tried a sheet on top of the bed, but the urine went straight through.  Is there a better way?  Or perhaps a home made cage for the floor?

Try a plastic/vinyl shower curtain with a sheet/blankets on top.  It's what I do when I let the kids out on my couch.

They also make tablecloths that are vinyl backed but have a fabric top feeling to them - should work wonderfully.  I used to have them and will be getting more as spring comes underway and you find them more often.

My rats love playing in the bathroom.  Very easy clean up in there.  On busy days it makes it easy to give them out of cage time while I am getting ready.

A flannel back plastic table cloth with the flannel side up works great! Easy to wash in the washer.

I have a few ways..

1.. A piece of coroplast on the coffee table or bed. Depending on where I am..

2.. Their smaller cage next to the bed. That way they can see me, I can play with them, but they are still on 'their' towels, fleece, etc.

3.. On my shoulder. Smiley

4.. Bathroom.

I'm still new at this, but I took a HUGE shallow box (the box our FF cage came in actually), and put it in the bathroom..  Our rats are still babies, so I didn't want them having FULL roaming range, (we have a -huuuuge- bathroom)  I put some fun stuff, (boxes etc) in there...

One of the girls found out how to scale the wall of the box after 20 minutes though so I'm not sure this is an option anymore lol
