I found some spotting in the hammock, and after close watching for a few days, found that the blood was coming from one of our hairless girls, Val.  I assumed it was some kind of uterine infection, tumor or pyometra and made the appointment to have her spayed.  She'd lost a little weight, but seemed to be eating fine.  The day before the surgery, she got really, really pale and I noticed that there was significantly more blood, but instead of being that dark color and rusty, it was paler pink.  Off we went to the vet.  I explained what I'd seen, and the vet noticed that Val's abdomen was not swollen, which would likely be the case with pyometra or tumors.  However, when you stretched the skin, there was a yellowish/bluish splotch, like a really deep, bad bruise.  We were both stumped, and decided on an exploratory surgery to see what was going on.  A couple hours later the vet called to tell me that Val had a HUGE cyst (think half an inch long) on the right horn of her uterus, and a smaller one on the left horn.  In addition to that, her ovaries were misshapen.  There did not appear to be an infection, but the vet believes that the ovaries could be cancerous.  She had, of course, done a total spay and removed everything.  The blood I'd been seeing was only the beginning.  Val had been bleeding into her abdomen as well.  She saved the uterus and ovaries so she could show me when I picked Val up.  I've never seen a normal one in person, but from pictures I know the usual, healthy pink color.  This was that color, except for these two really dark holes.  The only think I can compare them to is cigarette burns, but oval-ish, not round.  I'm assuming this is something with a genetic basis?  I have Val's littermate (we think) and am watching her closely.  They're about a year and a half old now.  I don't want to put Zin through an unnecessary surgery, but I'm a bit paranoid.  Val seems to be recovering fairly well from the surgery, but she's really tired.  I'm supplementing her with yummy foods and Nutristat and she has a warm rice buddy since she's alone.  Anyone know if these cysts are genetic?  Also, I've never done post-spay care before.  Is there anything specific I should be doing or watching for?

Without knowing the health history of the parents, grandparents, etc there really is no way of knowing. Cancers can be genetically linked. But there could be environmental causes as well. It is a toss-up. Personally I wouldn't have the other sister done, but that is just going on gut feeling not anything scientific Smiley

You're probably right, Melina.  I wish I had a history on these two.  Unfortunately, they're rescues.  I'll keep a close eye on Zin, just in case.  It's just scary how quickly this happened with Val.  She seems to be healing well, so I'm just going to keep caring for her as if this was any other surgery.
