I recently ordered a R-690 cage from Martin's, but stupid me got the galvanized version. I would love to get it powdercoated and am going to call around for estimates, but, when searching the boards, I found that some people have painted galvanized cages with nontoxic spraypaint. Those of you who have done this-- What are some good brands to use? And also- does it keep the "smell" I keep hearing about with galvanized cages out? Is there anything else I need to know about painting a galvanized cage?

Have they already sent the cage? You could just call and cancel the order or have it changed to powdercoated.

I have not yet done it but I have read some bird forums...since birds are way more sensitive and are also avid chewers.  I have come up with Krylon and Rustoleum for the best brands.  If it is kid safe (for toys etc) then it is ok for the birds.  Once it is dry they are non-toxic.  It is cold here still in Ohio...so waiting for warmer weather and will paint mine.

Yeah, they've shipped it. Thanks for the brand names, TheZookeeper! Does anyone know about the smell and if the paint keeps it out?

I painted my metal FN pans with Rustoleum Painter's Touch about 2 months ago and it has worked well so far!  I left them outside for a few days which got rid of the paint smell, and I don't smell any of the galvanized pee smell now at all.
