I have been trying in vain to find someone here in Paducah, KY to adopt from. The gal that I adopted my beloved Cassidy from has flown the coop so to speak and I cannot find anyone other than PetsMart that has ratties.

I prefer females. I have had 2 precious girls in the past few years and Cassidy passed away last month. The house just seems so empty without a baby around to love and play with.

We want to adopt 2 little girls so that they can have companionship while we are at work and have a HUGE 3 level condo waiting for occupants!

If anyone can point me in the right direction, please do!! My email is mso_ombuds@yahoo.com

Thanks for the posts!!! I think so far that the closest person I've found is actually on the other side of KY! We are limited in the ability to travel, hence the reason we're trying so hard to find someone locally. My husband is Active Duty U.S. Coast Guard and has to remain in the area most of the time so he can be available during an emergency.

We have owned 2 girls in the past 8 years and of course, one male hamster. Smiley So my husband and I have decided that we want 2 baby girls this time, so that they can have companionship and playmates while we are at work during the day. Cassidy always seemed so eager to get out when we came home, and I hated seeing her little face poking out when I'd get ready to leave for work. So maybe two playmates will be ok while Mom and Dad go off to pay the bills!!!!

Thanks for your help folks!

GOOD NEWS!!! I found a local breeder through a co-worker who has several female babies and I am going RIGHT NOW to pick out the newest members of my family!! I am so stoked I cannot even begin to describe it.

THANK YOU to everyone who responded to my plea!!! I will post pictures as soon as I can.

And...Thank you for welcoming me to the Rats Rule community. I hope to be a long standing member!

There's a so-called "breeder" somewhere here in KY that drops off her litters and retired breeding pairs at Petco.  I HOPE it's not her.  She breeds from petstore rats... and I have PROOF that they are an unhealthy bunch due to my latest ratty death.  If she's breeding hairless dumbos/rex dumbos, it's possibly her.

i hope its not her too, bowling green is a good drive away from here though, so i dunno if someone who cares that little about their animals would drive that far to get rid of them with as expensive as gas is today.

I dunno, she told me she gets rats from all over KY.  Makes me wonder!!  My Devil is from her, and he's been healthy so far.. but he's FAT, and she said the whole line was.  Scruffy was also from her... numerous tumors including one that killed her Sad  Not a healthy bunch, in general.

I really don't like breeding in general but if someone is really breeding rats from petstores who come from lines who are already overbred.. that makes me nerves. I do have petstore rats most of my rats are from stores but i would never breed them. I hope the rats are healthy and i agree this person should be stopped because i think she/ he is doing it for the money and thats wrong Sad  i say always ask questions. I always ask questions of adopters and i am more than willing to show the health or set up of my rat room and my rats.  I think people should be looking into this more and more since rats are becoming popular. I am sorry if i ran off a little but i am upset that she may get unhealthy rats. petstore rats depending on where they come from and the treatment are not all bad. True i always say breeder or rescue but in there are none in your area if you know what to look for and are VERY picky you can find some nice pet store rats. I almost wish she would have done that rather than rush into this without knowing the person... does anyone agree? sorry again for going crazy but this really makes me upset..

Nah, don't jump on the original poster.  We've all been excited when it comes to getting new ratties!

This "breeder" doesn't get any money from dropping off her rats at the Petco here.  Petco takes them as surrendered pets and puts them up for adoption, meaning free.

I wish I could remember the woman's name... I'll have to ask my former coworkers... they should know!  Maybe they'll know where she's based out of... she's in there often enough, from what I hear!

Not hairless dumbos!

I have a co-worker whose aunt is really into exotic fish. She made a call to the aunt asking whether or not she knew of someone who breeds rats. The aunt said that she knew of a lady that used to own a grooming business here locally that had pet rats and would sometimes have babies available. She made a phone call to the lady for me and we met up yesterday evening. As it turns out, she is the same woman that my son and his girlfriend knew and got Cassidy from years ago. One of her girls had a rendezvous with one of her boys and well....tada. She allowed me to pick 2 girls from the group and said that 2 of the remaining 4 were going to someone else here in town and she was probably going to keep at least one for herself. (They were a GORGEOUS group!) She even hesitated to take any money from me, but finally DID take some to offset the cost of her gasoline. I'm glad because she had rushed home from work, got the group together and then rushed out on a Saturday evening to meet me.

I had gone as far as to call several Veterinarians in the area to ask if they knew of a reputable individual who would have rats available. Only Dr. Ceglinski's office knew of anyone in the area that had rats available and that particular pet store is out of business now. The reason that I chose to look for a private citizen to obtain my ratties versus going to PetsMart (I don't even KNOW where a PetCo is...we only have PetsMart here in Paducah) is because PetsMart said very plainly that all they sell are males. I was so happy to see the littles ones after losing Cassidy a couple of weeks ago that I made the hasty decision and took 2 home. Within an hour, the smaller of the 2 males was showing signs of an upper respiratory issue (a lot of sniffling and sneezing) and the larger male seemed quite defensive of him. They exhibited signs of becoming extremely territorial and ultra aggressive and would not even allow us to reach into their new residence to sniff us to build trust. So we returned them, fearing that either one or both was ill thus causing their aggression.

I'm not a newbie to this. I take care of my rats as they are beloved members of this family. My husband and my 18 year old daughter even went with me to meet up with the lady who so kindly trusted me her babies so that we could see which ones would get along with the 3 of us. They are given tons of love, attention, stimulation and spoiled rotten by the entire family and most importantly, if they get sick, they get medical care.

As far as experience goes....No, mine would not be considered as profound as some of yours. These are girls number 3 and 4 for me but until now, I have not had the opportunity to put down deep enough roots as to keep as many ratties as I would LIKE to. Logistically, having to move so often just makes it stressful on the babies. I had one transfer with my first girl that took us from Seattle to Western KY and she was NOT a happy camper on that trip. Plus we stayed with a LOT of family trying to catch up on missed time and a lot of them weren't too understanding on WHY I love rodents so much.

I think that CalicoJen would agree that Paducah is a small enough community that if you know someone, you know someone else who knows that someone. Reputation definitely follows you around in this town.

Thanks for your concern. Whomever it is passing off sick babies needs to be stopped!  Angry But I do have faith that my path and hers have not yet crossed.

all my boys came from our petsmart and are luckily very very well behaved. i have had no real huge health problems with any of them, cort is going to be very small for life, but nothing life threatening.  i'm fairly new to paducah, moved here last june, but my husband is one of the 911 dispatchers here and i was amazed at how many people knew who he was. if your little girls ever have any health issues  i would recommend dr flanery, thats who we go to and i love them. they are a very rat/exotic friendly office.  its good to see someone from around here in general, i haven't met many people  other than through my jobs ( i do temp work).

Yup!!! Just waiting on hubby to get home because he's got the doozy of a camera that takes the best pictures. They are SO gorgeous. One is just so tiny and the other is slightly bigger. After a night of deliberation, I *think* I have settled on names...both types of flowers, perfect for spring babies!
Yun (Lotus) and Nari (fairybell) Usually, I name my pets after songs or musicians. (I am pretty passionate about music and it's my way of paying homage to it). I started out with 2 names from my husband's favorite band Genesis....Dutchess and (Lilywhite) Lilith but that's a mouthful. So Yun and Nari are a LOT easier! Besides, knowing the history behind the name Lilith in the hebrew history...eh, I didn't feel too good about naming such a precious baby after something associated with being an evil night dwelling creature.   Shocked 2

Will post pics ASAP!
