I was reading up on hammock ideas, and recently had purchased a ferret hammock for my girls, unfortunately it only lasted about two days when they ate through ties holding it up, and the body of the hammock itself  Does anyone have any suggestions to a ah...chew proof hammock?

Well, there's no such thing as a chew proof hammock, but the ones made by people here are very sturdy with grommets in the corners, which you hang using metal shower rings.  Take a look through the Swap Meet, and look for Dearpie, Chelsey's Cozies, Wonderrodent, and you'll see lots of great things.

Mine all get chewed so rather than the nicely sewn and grommeted ones sold by people here, I make them as cheap and easy as possible.

Buy the wire shower hooks at WalMart curtain hardware section $1.07 for 12.

30" x 30" Fleece baby blankets from Dollar Tree $1.00

Cut the blanket into rectangles of whatever size desired.  I get 4-6 hammocks from each $1 blanket.

Either cut small holes in each corner or just poke through the wire hangers.

Final cost, about $0.50 per hammock and they tend to get chewed on less than those with cloth hangers.

I have some old blue jeans that my husband was getting rid of and have heard of people using the legs as tube hammocks.  Just wondering if they last a little longer cuz of the denim, or not?  Either way, recycled clothing would be  cheaper than pet store hammocks.  You can't beat supporting the rescues that sell their hammocks here, though, when finances permit.

I did the same thing Willard suggested and the girls are loving them! Plus I don't get stressed out when they are destroyed like I used to with the expensive ones. I've also used the legs of kids sweatpants they've outgrown to make hanging tubes.

i went through two of them. what i did was i bought a six pack of mini clamps at the dollar store and took a foot long piece of denim pant leg, opened it up and clamped one side to the top of the cage so it hangs open. my guys love it, i also use it as a ladder to get to the second shelf. they've yet to chew through it. i also took a longer pant leg, denim, and stretched it the width of the cage and clamped it to the sides its about at the top of the first hammack so they can ether take the low road to their food or the high road to a hammock shelf

My Dearpie hammocks have always been much sturdier than store bought ones.  I actually have one large pocket hammock that is well chewed, but still useable from I believe over 2 years ago!  IT has been through the wash many many times.  I think they are worth the money!
