I posted a question about buying baytril online and the post was locked before I could respond, so I jsut wanted to say the following -

First, I wouldn't medicate my rats without speaking to my vet first.  I have baytril at home because one of my girls had a URI and the vet told me that if the symptoms re-appeared, I could start the baytril but should call to come in, and make it an emergency if the symptoms changed at all.  I know that he'd prescribe the baytil over the phone (since mine's expired) as long as the symptoms are identical and not worse.  I just wanted to have some on hand.  I noticed on a website that the price was about half of what the vet charges me, so I thought I'd ask you guys if anyone ever ordered meds online.

Second and more importantly,  I really didn't think through the idea that the baytril sold from a website would not be sealed in the manufacturer's original packaging and would be redistributed by someone other than my vet or a trusted tech.  I wouldn't take a risk like that EVER, and certainly not for the $48 savings that I was looking at.  I guess I was thinking about ordering Revolution online, also a prescription med but distributed in the manufacturer's sealed packaging.  I wasn't making the mental leap about the baytril not being sold the same way.  My bad.   Embarrassed

I really want to thank members Lise et. al. for pointing out the facts about the redistribution, etc.  Since I'm a newer rat owner, I rely on this forum for guidance and advice quite a bit.  Thanks, guys.

There are some online veterinary pharmacies that will sell prescription baytril with a prescription from your vet. My favorite is vetmeddirect.com for the 10% baytril. It comes in 100 ml bottles which runs around $100, but it was far cheaper than the vet. At its biggest, my colony had 50 rats, so I needed to have it on hand. I could also get a few other meds I liked to have on hand from them, like aminophylline and gentocin, all less than the vet charged. But this is something that people should always discuss first with their vets before keeping meds on hand.
