My brother had a female rat who had a surprise litter, and Somehow one of the males he owns slipped through the bars on his cage and into the females cage where she had her babies (We are guessing this is how she got pregnant in the first place..) Well last night he went to go check on them and the male was in her cage.. He didn't think much about it at first, So he put the male back in the cage and looked at the babies, Well it turns out, One of the babies Had a tail bitten off. And another had a tail and a back foot bitten off. They were still alive, I offered to take the mom and the babies to see if I cant help to see that they survive... But  I don't really know what to do in a situation like this..... Please help.  Puppy Dog Eyes:

How old are the babies?

The problem is that the mom is probably now pregnant again.  If a male can slip through the cage bars, I can prettty much gaurentee the mom can.  She needs a new cage, as do the males if they are getting out.  This just sounds really irresponsible, especially since he didn't think much of having the male in with the female yet again.  Lips Sealed

They are 6 days old.
I took the mom to my house, got her set up with a new cage today, I took the day off work just so I can keep an eye on them. So far, They are still nursing and alive, I don't want to put any neosporin on their wounds so babies or mommy wont get it in their mouths.. They aren't bleeding or anything, But I can't even imagine how much pain they are in.

Honestly, at 6 days old I highly doubt that there's really anything you or a vet could do.  I don't think it'd be very good to separate them from mom and take them to a vet.  I'd just watch them, especially if the wounds don't look bad and are clean.

But now you need to worry about another possible litter on the way.  I'd stuff mom with lots of protein and nummy food.

While the male in the cage is a definite no-no since your female is likely pregnant again, it isn't necessarily the males fault that the babies were injured.  From what I've read, females can do the same damage on accident just moving them around.  Males also tend to not be violent towards baby rats, so if he did do it, it was probably an accident.

Good for you for taking the female out of the house where the cages aren't secure.  Unaltered males and females with insecure cages is a recipe for babies.  If your brother has other females I highly suggest you direct him here where he can get some info about either buying a more secure cage or modifying the one he has to make it secure.

Actually, strangeduck, males are prone to being aggressive toward babies from what I've read. Sad

The little eepers are doing MUCH better.
I found a vet that specializes in small animals, brought mom and babies in to see him..
He suggested that I clean the areas with mild soap, and hydrogen peroxide deluted with water.
and if it doesn't heal, or it gets infected he will get them on antibiotics to get rid of any infection.
So far, No infection.
The little ones opened their eyes yesterday.
They are cuties. I will get pics up if I ever get a chance.
Mom is doing great too. I'm keeping her permanately so she doesn't have another oops litter.
I have homes lined up for all the babies, except the two who were bit. I'm keeping them.
