We've had a lttle bit of an odd thing here and I was wondering if anybody else has experienced it.  We recently switched to Sunseed - it's been three? Four? weeks now.  Some of my guys with more sensitive eyes have been having increased Porphyrin discharge in the eyes.  Not the noses, just the eyes.  And not everybody. Thinking I will change (again!) to see if the issue goes away or if I have another irritant in the house.

I've been using it for about 3 weeks with my boys, girls and 2 male guinea pigs and haven't noticed any eye irritation.  I hope it's not this great bedding causing your ratties distress!

Well, my idiot males have been burying themselves in the bedding (do not ask me on the WHY) and no eye issues here.

I dunno, but I took them off it and they eyes cleared up.  I'm not convinced it was the bedding, but everybody is pretty much back to normal.

quick question,

what is porphryin? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but I"m not sure what it looks like or what it indicates?

Yup, just more porphryin (I'm sure I've botched the spelling) - looks like eye crusties only red-brown, almost like dried blood. Some is normal, I've just been seeing more than I'm used to.  Mostly on the hairless and the pews.

It could be the baking soda that is causing it. I haven't had any problems, but I noticed it really sticks to my hairless rats so I might put them on a lab bedding.
