Loving every day with my 7 ratlings

« Reply #181 on: October 02, 2008, 10:22:04 PM »

I just keep coming back to this thread.     It just doesn't compute with me how someone can overlook a PEW because they think it's plain.  If I had to choose a rattie and there were 9,000 of the most beautifully bred dumbos and a couple PEWs, I would immediately gravitate toward them.  I call Waffle and Gordy my little angels because that's what they are.  I got them on my birthday, and I have smiled every day since.  The fact that most people don't want them makes me want them MORE.  I'm a sucker for the underdog, but it's a good thing.  I can't imagine life without these little angels.   Grin

OK... I have a confession...  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes
I love looking at your guys' pictures on here. Even the PEW are completely adorable...
But there was a PEW at the pet store, and she scared me a little. I don't know what it is, I don't think they're plain, I don't think they're ugly. I think they're very cute... when somebody else owns them.
I hope to someday overcome this - I would even consider getting one, but I think that rats pick up on our emotions, and I don't want them to think I'm afraid of them!  Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

Anyone know a good cure?

Close your eyes and play with them. Our little Nicky is the sweetest girlie-girl I have ever known. Even the vet told us she was so very feminine. If you lived close to us, I would let you play with our little girl. She would change your mind in a heartbeat.

I think my next rat will be another PEW. They are awesome.

I have a new baby dumbo pew! I need to get my fiance to take pics of him. His name is Garth. We got him out of the remainder of a feeder litter after half the litter and the mom were taken. These boys are about 3 weeks max. So now we have Wayne (a black berk dumbo) and Garth to add to our boys. My fiance didn't use to be crazy about PEWs, he said they remind him of lab rats, but he is in love with this little boy. Now to just wait a few weeks to intro Cosmo after his neuter.  Hyper

More Pinky! I got her from the feeder bin.  Can't help it. When i asked the pet store lady to open up the cage she says to me, "They're all whites."  AS IF THAT MATTERED!  But she seemed glad that Pinky was saved.  Just aware that these little ones don't have much going for them. :/

I have a PEW boy, and I absolutely adore him. His name is Patroclus, because in the rattie world, he's definitely handsome enough to be the lover of Achilles. I think he's beautiful. He has the smoothest and softest coat of any male I've ever owned, and he's such a lover. Even as I'm typing this now, he's in my lap licking my arms trying to get love. This is after he's destroyed one of the arrow keys on my laptop...but he's too precious to stay angry at.

I think Patroclus and his brother, Houdini (a beautiful black hoodie) were destined to be my rodent children. They were the last two rats in the pet store, and even though I'd originally wanted a pair of females, they just looked up at me with the most precious rattie faces that there was no way I was walking back to my car without them. The store attendent who was helping told me while he was ringing up my boys that he was glad I'd decided to buy them, since there was talk of them both being tossed into the snake food tank. They were going to outgrow their "baby" appeal in a week or two, and they were too "common" and "plain."

Pfft. My boys are anything but common and plain. They're two of the smartest, sweetest, most playful rats I've ever had.  Just more proof that there's more to an awesome rat than some fancy colouration.

@Koala
I've had him since mid January and I'm new to rats so I have NO idea how old he was.  Though I'm guessing he wasn't that old cuz he was a small guy.  I got him from a pet store (I know ... I didn't know better, until now) and had a hard time bonding with him right from the start.  Even had a bit of a hard time bonding with his adopted brother, but they bonded quickly after about a month.  He comes up to the top of the cage when I come over.  He's always curious what I'm doing when I'm over there.  He just HATES being picked up (Is never mean about it, he just struggles a lot) and doesn't really play with me at all.  He's SUPER skittish too.  Way more so then his brother.  Although I've found he LOVES to jump up my back or front onto my shoulder sometimes.  He just hates my hands...odd huh.

Kristy, you should try taking your boy for a backwards hoodie ride Ior a front pouch) while you are at the computer of doing housework.  This way he can be with you, you can reach in and pet him and it will get him away from the cage and he will be able to bond with you.  He may even get brave enough to get out on your shoulder.  This way it will be on his terms and he will feel safe.  Even 20 minutes a day will be helpful.  I have seen so many undersocialized rats come around by using this technique!!  Good luck.

Now on to the PEW awareness!!  As a Foster Care and Adoption Coordinator for Mainely Rat Rescue, I, too, have come to understand the much misundertood and often overlooked PEWs.  We struggle to place the PEWs, although at times we find wonderful adopters out there who LOVE their snowy white goodness.  (Yes, KoalaLou, I mean you!)  I am embarassed to admit it but I used to feel the same way about the pink eyes.  Then when I was looking to adopt a baby rat I found our Sophie on the website of a Maine animal shelter.  Technically she is a Himi, which drew me to her picture.  She was an older baby, about 4 months old, and was not snatched up like the more colorful babies as when she was younger she looked like a PEW.  I decided to adopt her and when she arrived I discovered her nose markings were very faint.  (Yes, I was dissapointed.)  She was also very timid and scared, hid a lot.  However, with time and patience, she has become my outgoing, sweet old lady and is a precious part of my ratty family.  Because it took so much to time to overcome her shyness, I appreciate and love her all the more!!  At 26 months, she is healthy, fat, tumor free and going strong!  She keeps up with youngsters and loves her shoulder rides.  She is a good girl and now because of her I am determined that I will always have a PEW in my crew!   Smiley

Rats make the world a better place.

I know a lot of people are turned off by the pink eyes, but I personally adore them. They look like jewels, so beautiful  Grin

I have one pink eyed girl, my little Magic ^_^ She's technically a Himi, but most days the color is just so faint it's nearly impossible to pick up the color on camera. When it gets colder she darkens up, but the camera still washes it out.

Magic is an absolute love. Her favorite thing is getting her cheeks rubbed. She starts bruxing and slowly sinks lower and lower until she's like a puddle of happy rat.. and when I stop she starts nosing my hand, just like a dog would ^_^ She's not as comfortable being picked up as my other girls (she doesn't struggle at all, but she sticks her legs out like she's bracing for a fall) so I just let her come to me, and she has no problem climbing out onto my arm and up to my shoulder Smiley

Sometime in the future I'm hoping to get a pair (or trio) of boys, and I would looove to be able to find a PEW boy! A dumbo PEW would make me squee XD

Kristy- that sounds just like my Cosmo! Momo has to be picked up under his end end and scooped close to my chest or else the legs stick straight out like he's being electrocuted or something  Yellow Cute Laugh He doesn't like shoulder riding as much as my other 5 boys, but loves to cuddle. And boy does he lick! And the tail wagging is great  Blue Dumbo Smile

My boyfriend was reading this thread over my shoulder and said, "How could anyone feed that to a snake? They're [the rats] so intelligent." Snakes are cool and have their place in the world, but I feel that anyone who bought a rat as a feeder would end up falling in love with it (though of course that doesn't usually happen). There are so many cute fluffballs here!!

Ack! Lucky you with a boyfriend who says that.. Mine just said the other day "you seriously want a rat?" (as I replied very quickly with a sharp "No! At least two!!"  Wink) he thinks their "just dirty rodents"
I've decided that when it comes to animals...he knows nothing.  Wink

But I'm working on warming him up to the idea. I've got a few years before I'm in a place that will allow me to adopt anyway, sad but in a way good I suppose...

Just wanted to add to the PEW talk that I've decided that when that day comes that I'm out of a dorm and can have furry animals surround me again, at least one of the boys I'm planning on getting will be a PEW  Grin Mt first guy I got when I was just a kid was a big squisy PEW. He lived a long time to, I think he was around for like 4 years, I was young an clueless so it was just him. "Tiny" was the piggys name, but he was such a cuddler. Loved shoulder rides  Ratty Smiley

Now off to 'steal' the banner for my sig.... Thanks Moondust!!

When I first got my two boys in July -- Euless (grey Berkshire) and Elmen (grey Dumbo/Berkshire) from PetSMART -- I loved their grey color and Elmen's big ol' ears. I was all about their color. However, I started to tell my girlfriend I wanted at PEW around September. I picked up the soft little boy at one of our horrible local pet shops, Wet Pets & Critters. (I didn't want him to become snake food.) I named the little boy Apple due to his red/pink eyes.

Now that Elmen has his eyes on the girls, Apple has taken over as the king of rat kisses. I am totally in love with PEW! I used to think they were ugly; however, now I'm finding myself drawn to PEW. I don't know what it is, but I'm in love with PEW.

Definitely something about the way their whiskers are so visible, and the swaying thing they do when looking at you....
