The FATTEST babies you will ever see.

Quinn's bubs turned 3 weeks old yesterday! All are such fat little spoiled things.
(Well, minus the runt, but he's finally putting on weight and went from 'skeletal' to looking.. like everyone else did awhile ago. Only with open eyes and lots of fuzz. Momma's getting tired of them, I think, but has never stopped being an exceptional mother. She'll still be concerned when I take them out, and will have to check them all over when I put them back in. The babies have NO fear of humans, and have started (Especially the capstripe girl) to climb on top of their house so I can pick them up easier. They're eating solid foods, drinking from the water bottle, and never stop moving. The largest one is BIGGER then the smallest feeder boy I ever took out of the cage. Granted, I figured he was only about 3/4 weeks old at the time, but she's still a tank compared to him.
Hooman momma thought it'd be mean to name me after one of Columbus' boats, but now that I'm so huge, she doesn't think it'd be so mean anymore.
I'm still wittle but I'm getting bigger!
"Ugh.. aren't they weaned yet?"
..Maybe Columbus is so small because he's confused as to where he should be nursing at?
I can't believe how big they are already.

He's a funny guy.
He's slightly more skittish then the others (Which means.. well, pretty much nothing since they're all as non-skittish as you can get) since I usually leave him in with mom while I take the sibs out so he can get some alone time (and hopefully some extra foods.). It'll be interesting to see if he ever gets large, or if he stays small.
Quinn's being such a good momma, but you can tell she's ready to be done with it!
strangeduck- The beige girl is staying (Same with Columbus) so I'll be able to see just how big and squishy she gets!
I'm sure eventually she'll look like a 'normal' girl, but she's just so big now!

Hey nevada moon! This is the first time I have seen pics of your kids and not sure if its come up about the little guy in the past but is he getting larger at all? Reminds me very much of another rat someone had a while back....kinda looked the same. I don't recall what it was that was wrong with the little ratter...need to go dig that thread up.....

He is getting larger, just not at the same rate as the others. The others are HUGE and growing fast. He used to be super thin- so thin you could see his ribs when he breathed in. Now, when you rub a finger over them (Since he has fur so you can't see them) you can feel he's put some fat on over them. For him, I think he's not as 'quick witted' as the others, as he seems to have trouble finding the nipples. The other bubs don't bully him, but they don't really scoot over and make room, either. I've thought about force-feeding him, but I really don't want to do something like that to such a little guy. (and he's never weak, either.) Time will tell if he's going to be a healthy guy or not. I know megacolon is a possibility, but in my understanding, that resulted in the distended belly look. He doesn't have a distended belly, but he's also not eating very much solids compared to the others. So, we'll see. I'm hoping he just ends up kind of shrimpy and doesn't have poor health overall, but he's staying here either way so I know he'll be taken care of.

Actually its his head that catches my attention. One of the members on the board, flyingduster, had a ratter a while back who's name was Cherub. She had hydroencephaly (spelling could be wrong there) and that is what your little Columbus very much reminds me of. Here is a link to some pictures of little Cherub:

Your little Columbus doesn't look as severe but he really reminds me of her.

Oo, I do see the resemblance. I'll have to read through the thread and maybe give my vet a call and see if she's had any cases of it. Columbus' head isn't nearly as dome-shaped, (and he is a dumbo, so that may factor in.) but it may be a possibility.

No, its not nearly as dome-shaped, but still its there.
I dropped flyingduster a pm, hopefully she will be around to check the thread out and maybe offer you some ideas.

My vet isn't horribly experienced with rats, so I'm not sure if she'd know much about it without a case. I'll have to do a bunch of research, too.
Well, I'm pretty worried/sad about this now. But I guess it's always been a part of my thinking he may not live long, being the runt and all.

When I saw Columbus's picture, my first thought was megacolon. MC babies don't start getting the distended bellies until they start eating solids. But you do see the failure to grow fairly soon because their little digestive systems just don't take up the nutrients necessary for growth. How's his muscle tone? MC babies also are pretty floppy and lack muscle tone. I sure hope he's not an MC baby, but you'll be wise to keep an eye out for it.
Here's a pretty thorough article with links to pictures and more reference articles:

He's very very not floppy. I'll take some video of him later, getting dinner ready now. He jumps and climbs and is FAST. Really, acts just like the others in that aspect. Megacolon has been a thought in my mind too, with his size. Don't feel bad for pointing it out, mamarat2. I've been able to tell from the start he wasn't like the others, and being able to hopefully contact someone else who's been through this will be very helpful to me. He has been putting on weight, especially in the past few days. Before he seemed like he was getting just enough to get longer and keep living, and now he's starting to fill out everywhere. He doesn't seem very hunch-backed to me, when he's running about his back is pretty straight.
Nevermind the silly face, he was grooming himself.

Well I'm the one who had wee Cherub with hydrocephalus (fluid in the brain basically) but I never saw her when she was very young and still on her mum, so I'm not sure what sort of early development was (though obviously she can't have done tooo badly or she wouldn't have made it to weaning and being sold to a pet store!!!)
He does have a similar look to her, but yeah the dumbo ears don't help (she could pull off the dumbo look quite well at times, and we don't HAVE dumbo in NZ! lol) so I'm not sure really if he is the same or not, I guess as he grows more it'll become more obvious if he is or not.
Cherub didn't live long. Most don't live long. I know of one hydro boy personally who at last time i saw him was over a year old and still going, though he was obviously mentally challenged... heh. And there's also PE on fancy rats who an almost normal lifetime with it as well. No one knows why they lived, except the obvious guess is that it wasn't as severe in them and they were able to carry on, though both were sorta 'handicapped' and needed help with some things sometimes.
Cherub needed help a lot at times, other times she was fine zipping about by herself. The MAIN thing I noticed with her, and also with 'Lucky' the boy i know in NZ here, was the total ignorance of heights and ledges. In other words, walking along (or buzzing along at top speed...) right over the edge of anything. The bed, levels, a table, whatever. Bruuuuuumm brooom broomm... woops! *flop*. heh. Poor wee mite, the number of flying leaps I took to catch her like a baseball in one hand as she buzzed off the far end of the table (that I swear she was right beside me so I could catch her easily)
That and the lack of co-ordination. She could buzz about easily, but working out how to both stand on your back legs and wash your face without falling over at the same time was difficult some days. And holding something to eat wasn't easy those days either, so she often got hand fed from a syringe (oh she could eat from a dish fiiine, but she'd also smoosh it everywhere and cake her belly in babyfood.... mmmmm. yummy. 0_o )
Now like I said, I don't know what her early development was like. She was obviously a 'runt', being skinny and smaller, but I don't get the impression that her 'breeder' would have given her any extra care or attention so I image she was perfectly able to feed from her mum and start to eat solids before I came along. I don't know how 'different' she was, mentally, early on, or if her breeder noticed anything more than being a runt (I wonder if they noticed even that. *sigh*)
Looking at him he doesn't look as bad as Cherub, in the head bulge thing. So hopefully he'll either NOT be a hydro bub, or if he is he'll be mild enough like PE & Lucky to live a good life still anyway.
Be warned, if he's a hydro bub, those special ones weedle their way right into your heart and life like you can never imagine. I still cry if I look at Cherubs photos, her tiny life still leaves an amazingly big hole.

The head does look hydro, but he has managed thus far. There are different levels of severity, so Columbus may live a while longer or simply not have it at all.
I have seen hydro in the newborn stage through the first couple of weeks and that was heartbreaking for me. That baby suffered and was unable to properly nurse after a fashion. I finally took him from the breeder and took him to the university to have him humanely euthed and then a full necropsy done. He would not have lived much longer and was basically slowly starving. Poor mite ddnt even have his eyes opened when all of his siblings already did.
I wish Columbus the best of luck
He sure is a cute thing.

flyingduster- Thanks for your reply.
It's funny you mention the mentally challenged thing, as there have been a few times I've jokingly suggested it. I haven't seen much issue with heights, since the house in his cage isn't very tall and he's always slid down the sides (They're slanted.). The only other high thing he's tried jumping from has been my hand, but since I give him extra mommy-time, he hasn't had nearly the same socialization as the others. I've had perfectly normal rats a bit larger then him, but still young, who'd try squirming right out of your hand, too.
They have a bunch of info on it on the rat guide, and he really doesn't look much like those either. So if it is something he has, hopefully it is a very mild form and he can end up living somewhat of a normal life. I never expected he'd have a full life without problems, but already I can't bear the thought of losing him soon. I was going to have him in to the vet to be checked out once he was weaned if he hadn't started growing more and all that, but now I'll do it regardless. I don't know if she'd be able to really suggest anything to help, but we'll see. It certainly sounds a bit more manageable then MC, so I'll hope that it's hydro instead.
I haven't seen him eat solid food (Laps up some baby food/soy milk) so I don't know if he can grasp it or not. He's the only one I haven't seen do it, but obviously with 3 siblings and momma there I can't be sure of who's eatting what. Wish I had a scale right now to measure his weight. (Will be getting one Thursday. Been meaning to, just never easily found one and so haven't.)
Given the pregnancy/etc history of all the mom's from Quinn's group, it really wouldn't surprise me to have there be some kind of birth defect in the bunch.
anita1216- He definitely does not seem to suffer, though he is a bit less playful towards his other siblings. I think a lot of that is just how big they are though, and the fact they play pretty wildly. They don't try pouncing him (much) but they all still cuddle up when they rest which is pretty cute. The fact that his body is storing fat now (and didn't seem to be.. at any point the past few weeks) is a good sign to me, but we'll see. When I picked him up a few days ago and noticed he was no longer skin and bones, I was pretty happy.
No matter which way it goes, I'm sure I'll be able to find a good amount of support around here. (Though, I am hoping he lives at least one good year.

What a gorgeous set of bubs and
for Columbus! What an adorable little fuzzbutt!
Looking at the thread on Cherub brought back so much. I remember reading and following her story so closely and being so torn up when I read she had left us all. The special ones on the forum impact us all, and she was certainly one of them. It's always the special ones that leave us too soon.

I have high hopes for Columbus. He may just need some extra care and who knows, he may have a perfectly almost normal life
Im assuming he will be staying with you then? Thats good, he will get good care and help as needed. Babies are so very precious, and he is adorable.

Despite his size, he acts pretty normal. He's clumsy, and I can't really tell if it's baby-clumsy or 'not-quite-right' clumsy. We'd already decided from the beginning he'd be staying with us. :3 I have a 2-yr old rat who lives with a younger rat right now (Full grown, but not young) who I think will be pretty good candidates for taking care of Columbus. We'll see once it comes time. Might even have a youngish boy that'd be a good match too, so we'll see. I'm getting a scale soon so I can measure his growth and make sure he's eating. Earlier today I caught him nibbling down on a lab block, so I'm trying to stay optimistic.
