I was wondering what your vet charges you for an exam?

I have to take my girls in....and the quote is $58 for the first rat...then $30 for the second (or 3rd...or 4th...etc.). Is this reasonable?

Well, I believe, if I remember right, mine is around $30 or 35 for the first one and $15.00 for each additional.....something close to that.  I suppose it depends on where you are at.....I'm in central Illinois.....

I am really beginning to like my local vet.  I really doubted her skills at first but she's proving herself to be good for my babies.  And her office fee is only $35 and is waived if any procedure is needed and she doesn't charge for follow up appointments!!  I had a boy with a neuter abcess that she had to surgically open up and the bill was $65 and she's having me come back in twice to check on it... for free!!

I decided to check out a new vet this week and she charged me $45.00(1 rat) for about three minutes of her time and then another $65.00 for two little bottles of meds...wont be going back there.


The vet I have been taking the boys to seems much more reasonable. I get charged $35.00(thats with two rats) for the office visit and then meds...think the baytril was $30.00 and the doxy was under $20. I dont mind paying the fees if I feel that I am not in a run them through quick as you can shop.  I may know alot about rats, but not everything, its nice to be able to have time to ask questions.

Office visit for any of my animals is $20. Baytril is usually $15 or so. If we've been in recently they often waive the office visit if there is another fee. Sometimes if I take two rats at once they only charge for one visit, which is nice. I think they did that when I brought my two cats in at the same time.

Dog Spay + Microchip + Regular Vacs + Rabies + Bordatella = $145. The microchip is $40, I know we did that with the cats.

Vet prices depend on where you live. Some states/cities have lower cost of living in general than others.
Where I live, vets charge anywhere 45-70 for office visit...2 week supply of baytril is about 37 and tumor removals are 250-350 based on complexity/time under.

My Specialist charged $45 per rat the last time I took two of them in, but I certainly wasn't short-changed on time.  He didn't charge extra to trim Louis' teeth (if I'm remembreing correctly); the Baytril and Chloro was about $50. He's tough to get in to see, no evenings or weekends, and his receptionist is a dragon of the angry variety (but only over the phone?).

My regular vet will see the rats for URI and minor wounds - we've gone that route a couple of times.  She's more modest (I had a cat in for her shots, $35 office visit.  They didn't charge me extra except for the meds).

Last time I evaluated tumor removal (which we ended up declining) the cost was a minimum of $500 for any vet I called, and only 3 would consider the surgery. My specialist quoted $700.

There are several other local options I may explore, but I really like the specialist.  We'll see.

The specialist I was going to see before I got sick wanted $60 for the first rat, and an additional charge for the other two. I'm assuming it would have been around the $30 mark.

My vet here in the city charges $49 for the first rat, and will see the rest of my colony for free as long as they are there for the same reason (i.e. URI).  However, if they are there for different reasons they each get an exam fee.  I've been fortunate enough not to have to treat more than one problem at a time.  When it's checkup time he sees them all for one fee.    He's fantastic.

 in my area only a very few vets see rats, the one I kept getting reffered to when I called around was this place called All Creatures, its 46 per rat, for an office visit, I've had bad experiences with them with my dog, so I avoid them at any cost. The other one in my area, is actually a Dr I found online from doing a rat search, he was very highly recommended, so I called his office.. 34 per rat! and if I bring in a second one for the same visit, he often doesnt charge for the second one! Neuters are only 45, not sure on spays as I dont have girls. But if you are in the Derby/Wichita KS area, its Dr Jeff Harod at El Paso Animal Clinic in Derby. I asked how often he sees rats in our area ( as Im kinda unsure how popular they are as pets here) and was told he sees them on a regular basis, and is very experienced with neuters/spays.

My vet charges 30-something for the office visit, and I can bring as many rats as I want.  If it takes longer then x amount of time (I don't remember how much time) she'll charge a bit more.  Tests/extra stuff obviously costs a bit more.

It's about 10 bucks less then office visits for my dogs (Even though it's at the same office, but with a different vet.) and it's not bad at all, really.

I live in a small town in far northern Dallas County, and I am blessed to have actually found one exotics vet in my area. She charges $48 for one rat, and gives me a bit of a discount on additional rats, but not much. My Shadowfax had recurring URI's for the first few months I had him, and a typical visit for him, including meds and any needed tests, was a little over $100.

I took in 2 of my rats to get looked at when I brought in my dogs to get vaccinated. I didn't get charge an exam fee for the dogs, and the rat's exam fee was $37 (for both).

My vet here in Houston charges 65.00 per rat for an exam. I like her a lot but she isn't cheap!

Mine's $65 also.  Very expensive, but I can't find anyone else within driving distance that will see rats.  So I don't have much of a choice.  There is no discount for a second or third either, it's $65 EACH!  And that's just to see them, Baytril and other meds are fairly cheap, in the $12 range...and tests or x rays are really expensive.  We're talking $100 and higher...trust me, I checked out the Vet list to find someone cheaper, but there is noone.

$36 for an exam, regardless of the amount of rats I bring.  $15 for a re-check.
