my rats have never been chewers but i am starting to notice chew marks in everything.

my question is: are there certain things that rats should NOT be chewing on? particularly plastic.... i use an old ice cream container for a hiding place for them, but there is a big hole in it now, and i think they are swallowing the plastic!?!?!??!! this really makes me paranoid.... should i be worried?  Worry

Rats will chew on just about anything, but they seldom swallow it.  Mine chew on their plastic igloos and such all the time.  Just consider pretty much everything that goes into their cage disposable.  *lol*

i'm almost 100% certain that they are swallowing the kleenex that they're chewing on... is that bad?

Paper, wood..that's all okay.  I'd be concerned about anything with tape, but wood and paper and even the plastic (which they are likely not consuming) are okay.  Rats are nature's little garbage disposals.  Their digestive systems are pretty hardy.  As long as they aren't eating anything toxic and they're still producing poo, don't worry.
