Male Rats

Hi everyone. I recently adopted two male pews so I have a couple of questions.
Can male and females (intact) be housed in the same room (the cages a couple feet away from each other) as long as their cages are secure?
Will the females going into heat bother the males? like, will the boys try to get out of their cage and go crazy? Sorta how male dogs get around females?
Sorry for the silly questions. This is my first time owning male rats.

Yes, males and females can be housed in the same room.

Being able to smell each other may get both partys 'excited'.  In my experience, the girls are more likely to find a way to the boys.

My question is this... why keep intact males and females in the same room, and subject them to the constant stress/excitement of seeing each other but not being able to be together?  I would think it would be better to neuter the males, so that you prevent any possibility of an accidental pregnancy if either of the sexes manage to escape and get into the other's cage.

If you can afford it, it's certainly safer to neuter one gender or the other. But speaking from personal experience, having males and females in the same room won't drive anyone crazy. Girls in heat are sometimes determined to get into the boys' cage, so you have to keep a vigilant eye on them when they're out for free time. It's not the boys that go crazy - it's the girls!

When I get some extra cash, I do plan on neutering the boys but that won't be until November.

i had a case in which Morgan could not handle the hormone levels cause  her to become extremely aggressive. i never like to have them close by because even experience owners have had oops litters. I have UN neutered males but once they are old enough and i have the money than they will be done as well.
