So my girls have had their cardboard box for about 6-7 months now...Maybe more, I don't exactly keep track but I know it's been at least that long.
It started off as a nice, perfect to sleep/stash food box.

A few months into box's life, my girls decided it needed a window:

Another couple of months went by...And at some point last night one of my girls did this:

Notice the perfectly horizontal chew pattern (ok i compromised it a bit with part of the roof collapsing during removal process)

I say it takes some talent to chew in such an angle and keep it horizontal. I think she might have been trying to demolish/remove one wall of the box for that 'open' feel/look.

I must say, your boxes last a long time, lol. My girls demolish theirs with their 'creative tendencies' within the first week. Crazy rats  Tongue

I don't know. Neither my boys or girls that I have(had) ever destroyed their boxes fast. Most boxes will last for months. Perhaps it's because I give them newpaper/papertowels to rip apart along with other chew toys that are more fun to destroy than boxes.

Any cardboard in my boys' cage is immediately chewed up then peed on.

Loving every day with my 7 ratlings

Years ago, we had a rattie that liked to be really closed in, so we put up a piece of cardboard on the side of the cage.  She chewed it...and I swear it looked like a middle finger.  I took a pic, but can't find it.  If I find it, I'll post it.

My girls love to chew their boxes so much I usually close them before I put them in the cage so the girls have to chew their own entrances.

Here we have the much loved, often chewed on, timber hut that has been around for ages. BooBoo & Jett no longer fit in it, they just love to chew on it lol!
