Cut/Sore on Rats Belly

Last night my boyfriend was playing his video games and just happened to look in the rat cage.  He just said, "what is that" and took Butters out.  Butters was COVERED in blood.  It was all over his face, all over his paws and belly.  We immediately went into basically a freak out mode and ran him to the bathroom to wash it all off.  After most of the blood was gone we saw that there was a scab that looked like it had gotten busted open.  Before we noticed the blood, Butters did take a tumble off of one of the shelves in his cage.  I think it busted open the scab and made it bleed.  We had no idea that there was a scab there in the first place.  Butters is a hyper rat so he really won't sit still long enough for me to feel all over him.  He DID sit still and let us wash off the cut or whatever it was under the sink.  Jon took and pulled off the rest of the scab because it was really gunky looking, not infected, just caked with dried blood.  We held a gauze pad on it to make it stop bleeding. 
Is there anything else we can do for the time being?  I put him in a one level cage with towels instead of bedding.  It did look better this morning but should I put anything on it?  He has been licking it so I don't really want to use neosporin or anything.  It looks to be an open wound about the size of a pencil eraser but it's not red or anything. 

I just feel REALLY bad because I didn't notice it before.

I've heard from people on here that rats heal amazingly fast.  I think that as long as it doesn't look infected, I would just leave it alone and not put anything on it.  Just keep an eye on it to make sure that it heals ok.

Just keep a close eye on it, checking for pus or a nasty smell and swelling.

Rats are indeed good at healing when it comes to minor wounds.

If you notice him acting lethargic, I would suggest calling the vet.
