Well, today I noticed that someone tried to rip the ear off of one of my rats (I suspect shingo). There's a cut at the base of his ear, about 1 cm long, from the opening of his ear, back along the base. I'm not sure, but it looks like it even punctured all the way through his ear in one spot (may just be some blood got into his ear though). I just noticed it now (saw the dried blood in his ear, it's kind've hard to see the actual cut), and it's all dried and doesn't seem to be bothering him. I don't think it needs a vet at this point, though I'm not really sure what the chances of infection are?

Anyways, is there anything I can do to help prevent infection or anything I should be doing for it? Should I take him to the vet? I would prefer not to if it's not necessary, but I'll do it if it's needed.

Clean it up if you haven't already, then put a thin layer of neosporin on the front and back of the cut.  Other than that, don't worry.

Usually neosporin is the one used, but I'm not sure about polysporin.  As long as it's a very thin layer I think it would be ok.  Exactly what medications are in it?  I can compare it to my triple antibiotic ointment.
