bathroom rugs for liners

I was going to throw out this old ugly bath rug that I inherited from my late great aunt and I thought hey why not cut it into perfect rectangles and use it for shelf liners. So I grabbed a real shelf liner i bought and traced on the backside of the bathroom rug and cut it out. They fit in place perfectly and since they are heavier and stiffer than fleece shelf covers they have not moved them. I have not washed them yet and I know this particular rug will shed but hey until it gets unusable it will be perfectly fine. I also found in the closet a never used rug that fits PERFECTLY inside the martin's R-680 and is just big enough to where the wire will sit on top and hold it down. The bottom rug is way better quality and in new condition so i imagine it will last for a long time unless they chew it which they haven't done. I think the boys love it, I know I would if I were a rat, it is so soft and cushiony in there.
I am also using them for my rabbit now as well. I know a lot of people use carpet scraps and what not for rats and rabbits but most do not like getting washed. But the great thing is bathroom rugs are meant to be washed!
Oh and they are sooo absorbant I love it.

Sounds like some great finds!
I was cleaning out the old linens closet and my mom said I could use all the old sheets and blankets that are stuffed way in the back that never get used

I haven't tried a bathroom rug yet, but I keep meaning too. Are you using one that looks like "real" carpet or one that looks more like commercial carpet?

Another way I use any rug parts I've trimmed off is to place the scraps upside-down in their play areas to keep boxes, igloos, etc. in place. Especially good on the bed where I keep a lot of toys and tubes out for playtime as they tend to get head-bumped off the edge otherwise and sometimes with someone insdie. The rubbery back really holds stuff in place.
I love buying rugs at yard sales or thrift stores for cutting up for cage use. I've also bought a few of those round, braided chair pads that look like miniature rugs - they go great under igloos, etc. in the cages and must be very comfy as every square inch gets covered in resting ratties. The last two I bought were only .25 each and I've found they wash good, too.

I have, a few times in the rat manor
The problem is, they're not something I could buy regularly and they start to smell funky after a few weeks.

I found a miniature one at Ross for 1.99 right after I got the CN. I figured it might fit the shelf so I bought it to give it a try. It fits perfectly and aside from Hershey nibbling on the underside a bit at first it has held up well as a liner. It's soft and cushy, holds odors down a lot better than fleece. I wish I could find more that same size so they didn't need to be cut.

I don't know what type of bathroom rug you use (if it's the shag kind, the woven kind, etc), but be cautioned that if there are any loops in it (similar to what you will find in towels) that your rats toes could get caught.

I would just toss the rug personally. Bath mats are really high-pile, and they're usually rubber-backed. Plus, a used bath mat is probably somewhat mildewy... yuck

I have a sanitizer setting on the wash machine and the rugs went through that on the heavy duty cycle with vinegar and all natural detergent. It doesn't have a rubber backing and the pile on the rugs is very short and not looped
It's OK though for me, they are just temporary and working fantastic for odor control. I just ordered 2 complete bedding sets so I won't need them anymore.
