Here is my oldest.........43 months and still GOING Shocked 2

He is my first rat that I got and he has outlived his offspring, his wife and manymore.
I cant beleive he is still going.
Gidget died at about 40 months
The other ratties died all about the 24 month mark.

Here is their info:
Both are Double Rexs,  Dumbo eared
They had one litter together (along time ago)
I got them at a Petstore(before I knew anything about rats)
They were on pine for the first few months then I grew a brain and got the good stuff.
They never got sick. Gidget didnt grow a tumer till her last couple of months of life.
I had to put her down because she lost her mind. Yes..... It was like she didnt know who we were and she bit up Tempilton''s back foot and half of his tail. She did a number on him.  She also bit us. We knew it was time to put her down.

I will let you know when he does pass away....If ever Blue Dumbo Big Eyes

Here are all the rats I remember:

Frank & Schmoozle, male & female curly respectively (Schmoozle did the oddest cyclic-balding thing...), bought from chain pet store, died at about 2 years 3 months due to acute respiratory distress.  Both were euthanized after I had a friend ratsit them and said friend "didn't like the smell" and bedded them on cedar.

Chi, blue hooded standard coat, bought from a chain pet store, died at about 18 months after accidentally breaking her own neck in an escape attempt (dove out of her cage, tried to climb an unsteady storage pile, and a box got her right behind her ears, poor girl)

Ozzy, dark brown agouti hooded, bought from a chain pet store, euthanized at about 3.75 years!  No scans were done but as his ears were quite clear the tilting of his head led to a diagnosis of probable brain tumor.  He was put down when he could no longer move the affected side of his body, but his temperament never suffered.

All the other rats I've kept were re-homed while in apparent good health due to upheavals in my own life leading to my long-time inability (thankfully corrected these days) to provide an animal with a stable home life.

Pandora (Petsmart Female, Spayed)-  30 months [chronic resp. issues and pituitary tumor]
Persephone (Petsmart Female, Spayed)- 30 months [chronic resp. issues, worse than pan's]
Syph (Local petstore runt female)- 18 months [resp. issues that progressed to pneumonia; she also had a mammary tumor removed and was spayed a few weeks before we had to put her down]

A note on syph...she was the sweetest, most personable rat EVER... really my best friend. but when she was six weeks old, she was the six of my thumb. By a year and a half, she was the size that my 3 mos old rat is now. she had respiratory problems from very young in life, despite all we tried to do for her.

all three of these girls were eventually put down, rather than allowing them to die a painful death at the hands of severe respiratory problems.
