I just averaged all the rats I've owned that have passed, and the avg was 2 years, 3-4 months. I dropped the two extremes (youngest passing -- 1, oldest -- 4).

Charly- hairless from pet store, died at approx. 26 months, apparent old age

Ivan- 20 months. survived a benign mamory that hemoraged and was removed. malignant thoracic tumor finally got him

Bubonic - Passed on suddenly at 2 years, 3 months due to unknown causes.

 Mr Flibble - One of Bubonics littermates, passed on two months later. He'd been treated a few months earlier for breathing problems, and had lost the use of his back legs. He lost weight and energy soon after his brothers death, and after being seperated from a cagemate due to fighting issues. Probably a mixture of old age, and the loss of the will to live.

Daisy approximatly 24 months - Extensive abdominal, lung (and who knows where else) cancer

Nori    30 months pneumonia
Nami   30 months pneumonia

Avocado - more than 53 months - kisses - comes when he's called - hops - jumps - sleeps on my arm - oh yeah - still quite alive

Kei (female) 24 months and 3 weeks old - probable congestive heart failure.

I have not included all my earlier rats, as the list would be too long, but Quigley the 1st was my first rat, I saved him from being dissected at school, approx 40 yrs ago.  As he was an extraordinary long living rat, I thought you may like to include him. Hope this helps your survey 

i have to say The Longest That I Ever Had A Rat For Was 2 Years And 1 Month And About A Week. He Was A Teen Rat When I Got Him So I Am Not Really Sure How Old He Was When I Got Him. I Got Him From Petco. He Was The Most Beautiful Rat That I Had Ever Seen, And I Am Pretty Sure i Will Never Get Another One Like Him Again. I Loved My Boo Boo Very Much. I got Him On June 15, 2004, And He Died June 3rd 2006. If You Are Wondering Why My Screen Name In My Rat Blaze That Use To Be His Name. Blaze. He Had A Half Star Blaze On His Forehead. The Blaze Went From His Head To The Front, Not Like Most Rats From the Nose To The Back. He Was A Capped Rat With A Blaze. He Was So Sweet. He Loved Me So Much And Gave Me Kisses Like You Would Not Believe. He Was My Baby And I Loved Him Very Much. He Ended Up Getting Really Sick And Dying. Sorry About Writing So Much And I Probably Didn't Do This Right, But I Just Registered Today. Sorry About This Again. Oh And I Wish I Could Show Pics Of Him, But I Don't Know How.

My rats are still young.. but my Aunt (who got me into rats) had a boy black hooded named Snuggles who lived to be just over 6 years old. He died of old age.

Juliet- 2 months,  sudden respiratory infection/ pneumonia (adopted from PetCo.)


Miranda- 3 months, heat-stroke (adopted from PetSmart)

Let this be a lesson to everyone who ever has to leave rats with a sitter: MAKE SURE THEY ARE EXPERIENCED IN RAT CARE!!!!!!!!

I thought specific instructions would be enough, and now I will never forgive myself.

A rat is a rat is a rat. PEWs/albinos don't live any longer or shorter than any other type of rat, just because of their color/markings. It has to do with family longevity (aka genes), environment, care, and overall health.

This thread is intended for people to document the deaths of their rats and the reasons for the deaths for an ongoing study. It is not the place to ask questions.
