wanna wanna BIKKIT!

« on: April 13, 2003, 10:36:52 PM »

When I woke up this morning, I realized that Kaela was looking unwell - puffy fur, labored breathing.  Oh great, I thought, looks like she's going back to the vet tomorrow to be treated with antibiotics again.

But at 6pm, she was cold to the touch, lethargic and breathing heavily, so I consulted with everyone on the chat at the time (thanks so much, all!) and took Kaela (and Piper for good measure) into my vet's office.

By the time we got there (I dragged my best friend with me too), Kaela was looking a bit better, but the vet still gave her an injection under the skin for dehydration and perscribed antibiotics.  Feeling a bit foolish for being so worried, I sat in the reception of the vets office with the other emergency room patients, talking about our animals.

Then Kaela stopped breathing.

I was lucky to be holding her close and notice that her breathing had suddenly gotten labored again, so I noticed the instant she stopped breathing, and so I was able to notify the vet tech right away, and they rushed to put her on oxygen.

Her heart never stopped beating, and the vets got her breathing right away.  It was still a surreal experience; I just kept thinking "this can't be happening."

So now they're keeping her overnight on oxygen.  I'm really scared that she'll stop breathing again, and that I'm going to get that dreaded phone call in the middle of the night..... I'm going over to the vet's right after my 8am physics class, so please keep your fingers and paws crossed for us that everything goes well.

I feel bad for Piper.  She's on meds too, just in case, and she's really depressed right now.  I just hope I can bring her sister back to her.

I got a call from the vet early this morning... she isn't showing signs of improvement, and if she doesn't continue to improve on oxygen they're going to consider euthanasia......

I'm skipping classes and going straight to the vet's.  I'm taking PIper because now she's not acting healthy.......

Sometimes putting them to sleep can be the most humane thing. I have regrets on letting my Buffy get so sick. She had such labored breathing and there were times she would panic while trying to gasp for air. If you are going to put her down, insit on being in the room and that its done by inhaling a lethal dose of anesthesia. My heart is with you...

Well, still not much improvement, and now Piper is really sick too.

I'm scared to death that I'll lose both my girls.  I don't know what I'll do if that happens.

I'm just feeling lost and frightened right now....   Sad 2

Sabrina, I'm so sorry. This is exactly what I went through with Indigo, my most beloved rat of all. She was my best friend, and she died in an oxygen tank at the vet's. So I know what you're going through and I'm sending comforting thoughts. For Kaela and Piper, I'm sorry that they are going through this. You are doing the best you can for them. (((Hugs)))

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's so hard to try and save a very sick animal while still having all sorts of school obligations and other things to do. I really hope that Kaela and Piper bounce back and feel better soon. Best of luck, and keep us posted.  Heart
