Author Topic: Canine similarities?  (Read 3941 times)

People who don't know rats always look at me in disbelief when I say the nearest I can get to describing the general character of my rats is as being similar to having 3 little dogs rushing about! Am I mad, or does anyone else agree?

They appear to be (most of the time) pleased to see me in the same way, exhibit the same degree of recognition (sticking close to mum when other people are around) and seem to show similar body language in some ways - such as bouncing around and running in circles when they're excited to be getting fed, or let out to play etc.

I've also read somewhere that rats have a similar level of intelligence to dogs - does anyone know if this is actually true? (no-one I've mentioned this to believes it can possibly be right).  Smiley

That's usually what I tell people.  Although I had a rat that didn't like the comparison.  She didn't care much for our dogs.  She just didn't see why we would have them.  She also felt her intelligence level was MUCH higher!

Ya Ali, I think your absolutely right. I often compare my rats to dogs when I'm trying to explain to someone what they're like.
As far as the intelligence level I'm not sure but wouldn't be surprised at all if they were similar.

I think you're right too.  I always tell people rats are like little tiny dogs.  And no one ever believes me either!!
Except for the few who've come over and bothered to meet them.  I made fun of my one friend because his dog
was afraid to go up or down the stairs.  He couldn't make this dog use the stairs for anything.  I said "even rats
can use the stairs".  And he didn't believe me.  So he came over and I put little Reno rat on the floor infront of the
stairs, I walked up them, called Reno, and she flew up them to me!  And he said, !&?% your rat is smarter then my
dog!  But I don't know if there is really proof of which is smarter.  Smiley

I've often told people my rats are most like little dogs. One of my friends actually got very angry that I would compare a rat to a dog and she became very defensive... that is, until she met my rats. Wink When I yelled to Cous Cous "up, up!" and she leapt up my front and perched on my shoulder my friend said immediately, "wow that's just like a dog!". Wink

Dogs are the usual fallback description, but often I describe them as somewhere between a dog, a cat, and a human.

Like making a triangle, with each point being a dog, a cat and a human -- the rat is in the center.  Wink

I firmly believe they are just as smart as a dog or a cat, and they're actually smarter than a few humans I know... Wink

Hmmm, I never really understood this...

I don't find rats to be anything like dogs.

I'm not sure what I would compare them to, nothing I think. They really are an animal all their own.

I saw someone describe them as having the intelligence of a cat and the personality of a dog - works for me!

I think they are quite dog like.  Mr. Higgins even smells like a little puppy to me Grin

So how do you describe them to people unfamiliar with the joys of rats?  When I describe something to a person unfamiliar with it, I try to do it in terms of something they're familiar with.  You know, "It tastes like chicken."  Smiley

When I describe them, I don't compare them to anything, because they really aren't like anything. Instead I explain, generally, their personality traits. I can't think of anything that's really doglike about them, besides they both really really like food.

Let's see... *thinking*

1. They're human-social and interactive.
2. They're trainable.
3. They'll eat anything, whether they're supposed to or not. Wink
4. In the wild, they live in groups with a defined hierarchy.
5. They rule.

Ok, the last one was a bit subjective, but I wanted five. Wink

I know they're their own animal - but you can say the same about any animal! I just find comparing them to dogs can be useful for someone who has no idea what they're like. Maybe your rats just have different personalities and don't show any of these traits.

For me it's definitely the bouncing/running in circles/getting over-excited and the general munching of anything they can get their paws on reminds me of a puppy!   Grin

Yep, recognise ALL that, Ali.
Aileen even calls our girls - Puppeeeeees!

How about when they do a bloodhound, nose to floor following 'trails'?
(Yuck, what IS all over our floor and sofa?!?!?)

Or the way they run off with bone-shaped dog biscuits to find a 'safe' place to crunch them?

Or how they sit waiting, looking expectantly at the door when Aileen goes to make their supper, then when she returns, bouncing along beside her until she puts the bowls down

And of course, they're always sniffing each other's arses!!  Grin

I have (had) a lot of rats, and I still haven't seen it!

If I had to compare them to anything it would an outgoing friendly cat.

I don't know, I've worked with animals all of my life, mainly cats and dogs, and rats definitely come closest to dogs! They are so sneaky and exciteable and they want to be with you, they want to cuddle and entertain you and they'll break the rules just to get attention. You can train them to do almost anything, they are very sociable with each other... some even look like puppies! I'd say if I had to compare, cats would be the last animal I'd compare them with... I've had more cats than any animal and they are just too independent, mysterious, regal and self-satisfied. Of course, like rats, they are very cute. Wink

Well, if it means anything, I don't see the canine similiarities either.

Usually, my rats are more like...um, cats, I guess.  But in general I can't really compare them to any animal.

Personally, I tell people they are like little dogs.....but smarter.  (sorry dog owners, not trying to bash or anything).

I like too say that they are like lil dogs. When my ratties feel like it they come to their names and they always run about with their noses to the ground or in the air. I would agree tho that they are more intelligent and alot more curious  Smiley

I think rats are like dogs in some ways and certainly of all of the small rodents they do show remarkable intelligence. But they are not as bright as a dog, certainly all my dogs have been brighter than my any of my rats, even our lurcher who is not sharpest tool in the box! Is still a somewhat brighter. That is not taking anything away from rats, they are still very intelligent little beasts, it`s just that dog`s are brighter.
