Rat Lover!

« on: May 01, 2003, 09:32:05 AM »

I don't post here often, but I'm hoping to help someone find homes for her babies - She's a nice woman who has the same vet as I do. She has a litter of 9 rats available to good homes. Here's the info:

Dad: B & W Hooded
Mom: Dumbo Black Self

Babies: All Dumbo Black Berks (this is based on her description to me, I haven't actually seen them)

Babies were born 03/28, so they're ready to go. They're in Westchester County, so if you're in Western CT, or northern NJ - they're not that far away...If you're interested (and don't I WISH I had more space?!!) please send an e-mail to dhussey@sva.edu

In order for these babies to be dumbos the dad would also have to be a dumbo. Maybe he is, but I'm just checking since I've seen many people who says the babies are dumbos (or half dumbos) just cuz one of their parents were dumbos, when in fact the babies are all standard ears who carry dumbos. Just checking Smiley

In loving memory of Zephyr. You are sorely missed.

I was thinking the same thing, Babyblue.. wouldn't BOTH the parents have to be dumbos for the babies to be all dumbo?

RC, you may want to check out the litter yourself and see what's up.  As BB said, she may be mistaken.. they may all be dumbo carriers.

But wouldn't it be great to have a black dumbo..  *Wistful sigh.*

Um...yes...actually, you're right....they would both need to be dumbo and/or dumbo carriers for the babies to have the ears...I took her at her word, since she didn't seem uneducated about rats - and at 4-5 weeks you should really be able to see the difference in the ears...  I didn't ask to go see them anyway, 'cause I thought that would be wierd if I wasn't planning to adopt one.  Wish I had room for one more - I'd take the digital camera & post a picture of them..

Just clarifying one thing. I meant the dad would have to be either a dumbo himself or a dumbo carrier. But it's unlikely unless he came from a breeder or something, altho I'm sure some petstore rats might also carry dumbo...

Good thing I won't be in Long Island for another month! Oh that and I already have too many rats, right Grin

Seriously, I recently downgraded my cage to keep myself from getting more!  My 6 boys are already a weensy bit crowded!!

Her rats would have to be from a breeder - there's only one store w/in about 6 miles that would carry dumbo rats and they're gotten from a private breeder.  I get the feeling that one or the other of these two escaped and visited the other cage.  (Naughty, naughty ratties!!)

You can get dumbos from just carriers, but I think it's unlikely the babies all are.. at most only half are if dad was a carrier, likely they are all just standard ears.  By 4-5 weeks the difference is *obvious* Wink
