Rats need to go NOW! ASAP! Oregon
«
on:
May 01, 2003, 06:20:16 PM »
My son was mauled, yes mauled by a rat here so almost all of my rats must go now! We rushed him to the ER this morning around 7 am and he needed 6 stitches to close the wound. I am only keeping four rats, two males and two females. The rest must go.
There is a hairless buck, beige standard
lots of dumbos
rex
velveteen etc.
babies are velveteen dumbos
I know I will hear a lot of bs about this but I am not going to risk my son getting hurt again, and because of one stupid rat my hubby wants them all gone now. This is the second time my son has been bit, from supposedly tame breeder rats raised for pets. Ya right.
This is so terrible for me because I have had a almost all these guys since they were babies, but because of four rats I took in it has come to this and now we do not trust any of them. The ones I am keeping will be kept up away from my son. Our room is usually shut but one little mistake of not shutting the door can cause tragedy.
Some rats must stay together, others will be returned to their breeders, if not they will be up for adoption. The "bad" ones will go with a friend. All others, ones that I and other respectful breeders around here have bred will be up for adoption. My ratties are sweet ratties, all of them, but because of these rats I got (which were supposed to be breeders and turned out to be evil) are crazy, and I mean the one girl is crazy. She bit my son down to the bone. I do not care how much people can say she didn't do it on purpose but she bite to kill!
If anyone is interested please contact me at
luckies4me@yahoo.com
All are pedigreed and some will make great breeders as well, to experienced breeders only!

Ok, I'm going to say this, but my son has been bitten not once, but TWICE due to MY OWN lack of attention.. I can't blame the rats, and I certainly wouldn't just get rid of them all for something that was essentially MY FAULT.... IMO that's more irresponsible than letting an accident like that happen...

If you can arrange to get them down into California I can add them to the MP rescue transport. I get many requests for such exotic colors and I screen adopters.
I'd also be more than willing to take the problem rats. I have no children and I've had good luck rehabilitating other peoples 'problem' rats.

IMO there are not STUPID rats or EVIL rats there are only stupid owners. Your actions toward these rats is completely uncalled for. YOU are responsible for supervising your children with the rats. One little mistake..is your fault. NOT the rats' faults. They are only doing what comes natural to them, whether it be for protection or whatnot. YOU are responsible for keeping your son safe. I don't believe any rat should be called evil. It is your responsibility to keep your rats and your children separated from each other. At least SUPERVISE the interactions. I would never allow any young child to handle my rats, for fear that they would hurt my rats..not the other way around.
There are no stupid or evil rats. Just rats without understanding and caring owners.

I agree 100% on this. I have had pets of all kinds for a LONG time. MANY of my pets have been rescues or adoptions from less than wholesome environments and/or bad situations. The animals were never to blame and they ALL turned out to be wonderful, loving pets. Every single one. There is no such thing as a bad pet. Only pets that became "bad" due to human midjudgment or bad decision making.

I'd just like some clarification: There is a big difference between an actual mauling and a bite that requires stitches.
Was the child, in fact, mauled or just bitten once or twice with one being very deep? I'm sorry to sound like I'm picking on you, I'm just having a really hard time with this. Even with our evil, sick, twisted gangsta hammies we've never been mauled, only bitten here or there.
The word maul means: to injure by, or as if by beating---hence, dogs mauling humans to death.
Sorry to nitpick, but these are RATS here. Rats! They don't normally behave this way, as you know yourself.
People should know as much about these rats as possible before accepting them into their homes.

I don't care what any of you say, but yes this rat is evil! My son almost lost the top of his giner, his bone was showing and his fat was sprewed on the outside. He had 6 stiches, 6 is a lot of stitches for a 17 month old baby. He lost half of his nail which will probably never grow back because it's gone, it was bitten off. It is about an inch long and all the way to the bone. The rat is lucky I was not there to see it or it would have been taken right away to be euthanized! It took a LOT of talking to for me to decide otherwise. Yes she is a rat, of course, that is common sense but there is NO excuse for a rat to act this way, especially when giving a nice home with lots of attention, treats, toys a big cage etc. NO EXCUSE!
What happened was a mistake. Dan left the door open on accident. It was something he didn't mean to do. My son is here with me all the time. The girls are in their own room so that my son cannot get them. The bucks are in the kitchen where my son has no way to get to them. My rats that I have raised and that were born here have NEVER done anything like this. You cannot get near this rat or she will lunge at you. I have seen several unsocailzed rats but none like this, she is crazy and that's the God awful truth. If any of you want to judge me for hating this rat because my son has a chance to lose his finger than so be it. I could care less.
Do you know what it is like to rush your son to the ER with blood spewing everywhere? He bled for an hour and a half!!!! That is a LONG TIME! Then to have him strapped in something that looks like a crazy mans suit while they stick huge needles in and out of his finger and he has a bunch of strangers holding him down so that he cannot move? Do you know how scary it was for him and painful and scary for us? We cried all morning long!
A nip is a lot different than what happened here. I have been bit before but have never seen anything like this, she bit to inflict pain and if she has the chance would have kept going over and over.
There is no such thing as a bad pet? Hrmm, that's funny. What about all those dogs that kill people? They are not bad? They do not deserve to live and roam the earth in my honest opinion, no animal like that does. It's not worth the risk. What rehome them so they can do this to another person? I tried everything with these rats and nothing worked. I am not going to risk it, the rat is better off euthanized.
So you al lcan think what you want, but the rat is crazy, she has something wrong with her brain and for someone to not comprehend that after what happened to my son is just a shock to me! I am sorry but my son and family come first, and they always will.

And just so everyone here knows, I kept a lot of my rats. The ones that left went to a friend until they go to their new homes, as they have been sold for awhile and I just need to drop them off. I have had my babies since they were babies and some just cannot leave, but those four did and they will never come back, I will not risk it. My social, loving, kissers will and did stay here with me,, and they will until they die. They do not deserve to go just because of one bad rat, and I needed to explain this to Dan. I am lucky he didn't go take them all to the petshop because when something like this happens to your child it's very tramatic. Now again, my rats are here, with me at my house and they won't be leaving. I had some leave and they are comming back because I cannot bare for them to be gone, I cannot do that to them. They do not deserve to be punished for something they didn't do.

First you say "What happened was a mistake. Dan left the door open by accident" then you say the rat is evil and doesn't deserve to live?
You don't care what we say? That's good. Then you won't be insulted when I say that after hearing THAT post, I don't think you should be ALLOWED to own animals.

There is absolutely no way that a rat should come into contact with a 17 month old baby. This should never have been allowed to happen.

No, these dogs are not bad. They are only as "bad" as the humans who have misbred or mistreated them or not taken into account how to properly care for them according to their breed specific needs.
No excuse, indeed.

Look. I'm sorry about what happened to your child (befor you start, yes I have a kid, he's 2 and a half years old, and yes I"ve had to rush him to the hospital on emergencies befor), but it's not the rat's fault. You admitted it yourself it was "Dan's" mistake for leaving the door open. What do you expect a 17 month old to do? He probably smelled like something yummy and happened to the cage where you can't stick your fingers through the bars or you get bitten. Children's skin is MUCH more tender than adult skin, so the bite probably wasn't as hard and vicious as you seem to want us all to believe.
NO rat out there is "out to get" humans. If that rat is, in fact, vicious, it's because either you or the person who owned her befor you abused her, neglected her, or frightened her. Sounds pretty suspicious to me...
If every rat that bites, in your opinion, doesn't deserve to live, than for the sake of animals everywhere, adopt out all those poor things and never own them again. Would you get rid of your child if someday he lashed out in anger and aggression and hit you? Or bit you? Would that make him evil and vicious where he should be euthenised?

Dan left the door open..the door that contained such a "crazy" and "evil" rat? How appalling!
Until you can get Dan under control and teach him to be a responsible pet owner, I suggest you re-home all the rats. You never know when Dan will do a crazy thing like that again and risk hurting your son. Your son and the rats shouldn't suffer due to Dan's foolishness. Maybe it would be best if you checked the security of the cages after Dan is done with them.
I hope the rat finds a good home. I'm sure it will be refreshing for her to do so.

Really, if you were closer, I'd love to take this vicious rat off your hands. She'd do great here.
And Rumble, you can't afford the rats you have now. What makes you think you can take on another? Deal with your own rats first.

I wasn't planning i taking her myself. I have a friend in OR. that may be willing to take her in. MY friend does rescue work alot and i will have to talk to her but I think she would most likely take her in. I dont want to see this rat euthanized because of mistakes or accidents caused by her owners carelessness. But I know I can not take her in here but there may be a few people i know who might. Taht is why I was asking so I could ask her.

I'm going to stay out of the "evil rat" argument, but I DO have to say something about killer dogs...
As someone who has spent time in the shelters working with abused, abandoned and neglected dogs, many of whom were "killer breeds" (Read pits, and some Rotties), I can honestly say I disagree with you 110%. A dog grows up as it is trained. Yes, the breed does make a difference. A pit that is never socialized can be a problem, but it isn't the dogs fault. If the owner keeps it on a short chain, and never lets anyone else touch it, they're going to have a "bad dog" on their hands. The animal is merely a result of the humans direct, or even indirect, training.
If you haven't read this before, this poem really is what I'm trying to say: [http=http://www.rodenthabit.com/other/finedog.html]One Fine Dog[/url].
One thing baout the rat though... By any chance does she have pink or ruby eyes? Since they often have a harder time seeing (greater light sensitivity), she may be blind, which would be why she is biting so readily.

I have a two year old child too. And she has been bitten, HARD. You know what, I posted here and said it was all my fault for letting her hold the rat while she had a lolipop. She didn't get stitches but she still has a big scar. It bled like crazy.. And this was our friendliest sweet calm boy.. he goes to school and he sat on my shoulder all halloween getting patted by kids. He just missed the lolipop he was trying to eat and got her sweet thumb instead.
her finger went crunch crunch crunch. They can do a lot of damage without intent to kill or maul.
I frequently let my daughter(s) interact with the rats. It is my responsibility to make sure her hands are clean and the rat is in the right frame of mind, etc. Even after that bite she still loves the rats and asks to see and hold them a lot. I dont think its bad at all to have rats and kids.. BUT
All my cages are kept out of reach. Not behind a door, within reach, but UP out of reach. Even 17 month olds can learn to open a door..If you are going to keep the rats please at least put the cages up so this doesn't happen again. Also since you didn't see it happen, how do you know which rat it was? Or what your son did to provoke it? I do not let anyone except myself reach thru cage bars... but since i can't expect a 2 year old to follow this rule I make sure it cant happen. I also have a very tempermental rat.. with him I am especially careful and no one but me is ever allowed to even touch him... he has bitten me so I know he'd bite someone else. he is up on a tall dresser, in my bedroom, which has a tall babygate in the doorway.
I really am so sorry your son has been bitten so hard and his finger is injured so badly... when we first moved in to this house my daughter ( then age 9-10 months, pushed the cellar door open ( it didn't latch tightly and we'd only been in the house 2 weeks so I didn't know) and fell down the stairs and I had to call 911 and everything so I know how terrifying that event can be.. and I imagine you have had time to calm down and reflect a bit at this point. It sounds like there are people willing to help you out with some of these rats and it may be a good idea to rehome a bunch of them, because even a friendly rat could nip at your son and cause a lot of damage if your son can reach through the cage bars.
I will keep your son and your ratties in my thoughts.
