Too Tired to Tango!

« on: May 07, 2003, 10:11:00 AM »

I purchased my two girls at Petsmart on May 5, 2003.  At the time I heard no sound from their breathing, and no sneezing or discharge, both were pretty active and by their selves.  Now Merry has a red discharge around her Nose!!
1) What is this?
2) can i get a referral to a great book so I am not driving you all crazy with my newbie questions??   Huh

Thanks

The red discharge is porphyrin. Rats get this either when they're sick or stressed. Considering these rats are very new I would say it's probably the stress of the new environment, often rats would start sneezing when you first bring them home. I would wait a few days and watch out for any other signs, then if it doesn't improve bring them to the vet.

Good place to start on your research would be our Reference section. Many rat books I'm afraid are not very accurate and overdated. One book I do highly recommend is Debbie D's Health book.

Welcome to the wonderful world of rats!

Porphryin. Usually a sign of stress, or illness. I imagine in her case it's stress from a new environment. If it doesn't subside, I'd be worried.

Also, take a look around the house to see if there's anything that may be irritating her... smoke, strong scents, etc.

Edit: babyblue, you owe me a garbage plate. Wink

Thanks everyone!

No strong scents, more than likely stress!!  If it does not improve or other symptoms arise I will take them to Alameda East for vet care!

That's just not fair!!!  I want Alameda East to be by me!

You can order Debbie DuCommon's Health book from the RFC website (which I don't have a link to here at work!) But I bet it's linked to on Suebee's website, which is ratsrule.com.  Smiley

Wow, I'm jealous too!  My vet is awesome, but he's not on TV.  Grin

Welcome to the world of ratty ownership, as I'm sure you've noticed by now, it's quite addictive.  Also, don't worry about "driving us crazy" with newbie questions.......You just have to post three pictures for every question...oh wait... ^_^

Seriously though, newbie questions are good, means you're doing what's best for your furkids by educating yourself!  If I had had this forum when I got my first rattie he would have had a much better start.

LOL this has nothing to do with rats. It's a local (Rochester, NY) thing, but I can't even explain it cuz every time I had it I was drunk! Yellow Cute Laugh I swear you can't eat that stuff when you're sober, but it's sooo good after you're wasted!

Thanks for all the help guys!!  Yes Alameda is expensive, but well worth it for small animals!  I am sorta in a panic mode about my little girls, Merry is still weaving!  and it seems more pronounced though she is eating and getting around fine otherwise.  So Alameda might be making some more money soon!!!   Puppy Dog Eyes:

Weaving in what way?  Some head weaving is normal, especially in rats with lighter eyes.  Their eyesight is pretty poor even at best, and weaving helps them get a fix on things.   So if that's all she's doing (moving the head back and forth, kinda like a snake, of all the weird things), then it's perfectly normal.  If it's a whole body weaving, there might be something more going on, though.  And if you're worried, the vet visit is well worth it for the peace of mind it brings.  Besides, you might get to be on TV!!!   Hyper

Was she standing on just her back legs, or all four?  And I don't think you've said what color her eyes are.  If they're red or pink, it might just be normal sight weaving.  None of my kids have done it for a while, they're all dark-eyed at the moment, so I forget how much of thier bodies weave.  It's been a while.  Maybe someone with light-eyed rats could give some more current input?

Well, dark eyes don't guarantee good eyesight, it's just rarer to find dark-eyed rats that weave.  Smiley How is her behaviour otherwise?

Yup, we've got a couple that even "ceiling walk".  They grab the top of the cage and pull themselves up and move their way across the roof.  It's pretty funny to watch.  Smiley

But, if she's acting pretty normall otherwise, I wouldn't worry about the weaving too much.  Most likely she's just nervous, and has bad eyesight, so she wants to make sure she checks out her environment very carefully.
