But the girls are pretty good at keeping themselves groomed! Cheesy

Mine get a full groom session (baths, nails, etc) prior to club events where I know they'll be held a lot. Some of them like the water, some of them squeek in protest.
Just don't bathe them too frequently because it washes the natural oils out of their hair.

I do it OCCASIONALLY.  Not very often.  Sometimes they go through periods where they're peeing all over each other during play time, and they stink to high Heaven even though they groom themselves all the time.

I use baby shampoo on them.

I get the water warm, but not too warm, and then wet the rat.  Then, put a tiny dab of shampoo on her back, and rub.  Then, the rat is rinsed clean, and rubbed with a towel to remove excess water.

All rats are placed in the cage after the bath where they are then allowed to give me dirty looks as they groom themselves.  LOL!

I'd say they get bathed once every 3 or 4 months.  They only get it when they're really stinky.

Only when they really need it.

Having said that, my last crew were not too into water, so Rimmer has never had a bath in his life!

The new boys are less resistant to water, so I might try letting them play in the tub, if not a full bath with soap and the whole nine yards....

I only really bath mine before shows...so once every 6 months.  I do occationally have give one or two of my older bucks an addtional bath between that time, due to bad cases of greasy "boy back".

Just make sure that you don't bath them too often...as you can strip the natural oils out of their coats and give them skin irritation.  Also use a mild soap like puppy or kitten shampoo.

I used to bathe my ratties, but they hated it so I don't do it anymore. But it was an hilarious experience. Ratatouille would be jumping from the water to my shoulder every five seconds, and Tortellini just sat in one spot making this awful hissing noise and looking VERY angry.

BUT, now it seems Parchisi and Cous Cous like water... so I think I will get them a Barbie pool this summer to play in. Wink

I have never given a rat or a cat a bath in my life, and they seem just fine without it!

If you really want to , I would suggest starting when they are babies. This might make it easier for them. Wink

I have been giving my boy weekly baths and nail trimmings, since he had scabs/mites. He's also a lot greasier than my girls.

My girls get their nails trimmed once a week, so they dont tear me to shreds. If I give one rat a bath, I will bathe as many as need it. Sometimes they keep themselves clean, sometimes they stink. My girls get 1 or 2 baths a month.

Absolutely!  They get one about once or twice a month, using water and some Borax from the laundry section at the grocery store.  It only has two sodium chemicals, kills germs, and no suds, and it makes their coat really soft and clean.  It also doesn't hurt the eyes at all and only cost about $5.00 for a whole box.  Much better than any shampoo you can buy.
Of course they really don't like the bath too much, but they don't squeek about it, either.  Try out Borax sometime.

My baby plays hide-and-go-seek!

« Reply #12 on: April 25, 2002, 07:50:45 PM »

Yes, when they need it.  However, I always make sure that they are plenty warm afterwards.

When I am getting ready to bathe a rat (or any other rodent), I put 4-5 (clean & dry) towels in the dryer first.  I wait about 10 mins before starting their bath.  That way, when they get out, they are guaranteed a warm, fuzzy place.  When the bath is over, I use one towel to give them a once-over drying, then wrap them in a second towel (throwing the first one back in the dryer).  I unwrap them and wrap them in a third towel (throwing the second towel back) after about 5 minutes.  I continue to rotate towels every 5 minutes until they are dry.

If your dryer is particularly hot, you will need to adjust times/temperatures.  However, keep in mind that their body temperature is much higher than ours, so something that seems too warm for you may not be too warm for them.  Just stick to cotton (and similar fabric) towels.  Some synthetics can get too hot (like the metal bits on your jeans).

SIDE NOTE:
My first rat (Cricket) actually loved the water, so I would give her "baths" more frequently.  They were actually not baths so much as swimming sessions.  In the summer, I took her down to the creek and let her swim around (under VERY close supervision, of course), then let her sun herself on her favorite island.  When the weather turned cooler, I would put some toys (including a small ball and a boat "island") into the bath, fill it 5-6" with slightly warm water, and let her swim around.  When she was done, she would hop up onto the side of the tub, and be greeted by a warm towel.   She loved it.  Grin

my friend had a white rat called o'sharnia and she seemed to get dirty alot, so she bathed her about every 2 weeks. my mate would put a bit of luke warm water in the hand basin and get a little bit of shampoo and rub it in to her... just being careful not to get on her ratties face.
o'sharnia loved it!!! at the end after her bath, my mate would put the tap cold tap on just a bit so it would drip..... she would jump and try to catch the drip in her mouth.... it was sooo cuuuute! when she was done she would try to climb out and we would towel her down gently Smiley

I had to give my rat Tikosyn after she tipped over a bowl of milk and got it all over her.  She didn't like it tho.  Afterwards when I gave her a treat she took the treat, threw it on the floor, and bit me.

haha....not too hard...but enough to let me know not to do THAT again.....

Hee hee!  That's pretty funny!  (Sorry, Krystal.)

I bathe mine only when they need it as well--maybe once a month.  Also, I'm trying to help Petzl get rid of a little butt-dandruff.

I use a brand of pet shampoo called--Earthcare?  with a circle of animals on the label, in the oatmeal-aloe variety which is allegedly quite moisturizing when you leave it on for a couple of minutes.  In fact, I decided to test it on myself first, and I liked it so much that I've started alternating days with my human shampoo!  I need heavy conditioning, too, since my hair is fragile, so the oatmeal-aloe stuff is indeed very gentle.

The ratlings hate the water, though.  I make it medium warm in the bathtub and about halfway up the body/rat-knee-deep; then I make an "island" in the middle with something like their little travel cage so they can hop onto it when they're terrified and not straight out onto my shoulder.  I use only a drop or two of the shampoo, and never wash their heads.  Finally, I towel them until they're almost dry; I try to stroke their fur with my fingers in the towel, as they realllllly seem to like it, perhaps thinking that I'm grooming them or something.  It's their favorite part of the bathing.

I don't think it's recommended to bathe rats until they are youths, perhaps 6 weeks old or something, but if you wanted to get the babies used to water, perhaps you could just try putting them in the bath to play, no soap added.

P.S.  I try not to use soap at all (most things will come out with enough water.  When soap is required, I use "Mane and Tale".  It is made for horses, but is approved for human use.  And it makes their coat very soft/shiny.  They don't seem to be interested in eating it, either, which was my problem with the baby shampoo I tried.

I always wash out the conditioner completely, regardless of the fact that it says you can leave it in - rats lick themselves more than humans or horses.

I had a crew of four brothers and Drew and those guys were filthy rats, would mark each other and get dirty looking tails, etc, they just seemed to neglect grooming their tails.  I would set up a series of buckets of water in the tub, take a rat, dunk it up to its head in the first bucket, take it out, shampoo it with kitten shampoo, dunk it in another bucket to remove most of the shampoo, then gently pour water from the last bucket working from head down to tail, ruffing fur with my fingers to get all the soap out, pop rat into a towel, and hand off to my daughter to love and dry off and hug.  I wore rubber gloves to protect from nails, never had a biter, although I had a squealer.  I have heard of others say the rat may bite at the gloves, but mine never did.

Even though I know that I'm essentially just sniffing pee, it smells sooooo scrummy! I think it might change as they get older though - my friend's boys most definitely smell pee-y !  Grin

Actually, you're smelling their musk... there's probably pee in there, too, but the musk is the part that smells good.  Wink

My boys are finally starting to smell good! They smelled like babies for a while, but now, at 8 weeks, they're starting to smell like men. Grin

Mine REALLY hate water, so they get a brief rub-down with a washcloth and mild soap once a month or so-only when the piddle smell over rides the arrowroot smell they seem to have-for some reason they are always peeing in the hammock that they sleep in..

Any one ever train rats to water from a young age? I know you need to do that with most cats...

Bathtime isn't a very popular thing in this house.  But occasionally it's nessisary.  Thank God not
very often!  I found a way that is more rat and human friendly.  I use those bath wipes for cats/kittens.  They do
the job.  Stains come off, smell is gone, and fur comes out soft.  I get a little nervous about the little rattie licking
off her fur right after even though I'm told it's completely safe.  So, I dry her off with a towel and keep her pre-
occupied until she's totally dry.  She doesn't "like" the wipes, but she'd take 100 baths with them before 1 bath
in the sink!  Plus I don't get soaked and scratched up this way.

I use Neutrogena shampoo, because it has no dyes or perfumes, and it rinses much better than baby shampoo in my opinion. I use the pet wipes if they step in something or drag their tails through something, but dont otherwise need a bath.

So why is it that when you're trying to wash off the effects of marinating in pee, they hate the water, but when they're pea fishing they'll quite happily sit up to the armpits in it?
