Oh man, you should have seen the response I got from a waitress at Friendly's today. I wanted two sauce cups to put their watermelon in for the ride home. When she asked what I needed them for, I told her I was picking up some precious ratlings from a breeder.

I have never seen anyone look more confused.

She gave me the cups, and said, "Nevermind, I'm gonna pretend I didn't even ask."

The other day, I saw an old friend at the store.  I had some ratty scratches on my hand so she asked why my hand was a little scratched up. I just replied offhandedly, "Oh, my rats get a little frisky when they're playing."  She FREAKED OUT.  Then she said, "I had mice for my science experiment, and I was DISGUSTED! I couldn't IMAGINE having rats."  And I said, "Oh, I have a mouse too..."

lol, i'm glad I don't have to get offended by these things, even though she is being terribly prejudist!
