A little obsessed with rats...

WWW
« on: June 17, 2002, 02:27:20 PM »

Saw this at petsmart and didn't know what to think, lol.  It's less expensive than cell sorb, which I'll prolly switch to, so I want to know how good it is as bedding.  Also, I'd like to know everyones' comments on walnut.  So, this bedding is made out of wheat.  I don't know much else about it.  help?  here's the url- http://www.petsmart.com/small%5Fanimal/shopping/bedding%5F%5F%5Fnesting/products/product%5F10674.shtml

I plan on testing it with my boys. Right now, I have the gerbil in a swheat scoop tank (borrowed from the cat litter stash). He seems to like it. His wheel doesn't jam from the bedding, it's easy to clean the urine (gerbil turds are really small so I have to get a very small scoop for that! Rats probably easier). The only caveats is that you may have to spray some non-stick cooking spray on the bottom of the cage/tank before adding litter as it WILL stick no matter how little pee there is and they may nibble at it in the beginning, but the gerbil stopped quickly. As for the catbox, I have a male cat and I NEVER smell that strong odor using thist stuff! I can't wait to get rid of the carefresh to try this!

Good to know!  Might just try it, lol!

Also, any opinions on diaper cage liners?  Was considering getting a pack to see what happens, as well.  they're at http://www.ferretstore.com/cd-244.html

It makes me wonder what it contains to make it clump. They say it's non toxic if ingested, but what if it's inhaled? Their 'learn about' link suggests that you can use clay litter too, which has known issues if the dust is inhaled. I'd be a little wary about trusting them too far.

Check swheat scoop's actual site for information. I forget what it is though, you may have to search it through Altavista. The actual site puts down clay litters. I wouldn't trust the advice from petsmart!

It's purely wheat. The clumping forms from the gluten which makes bread stretchy and my stomach explode. From cleaning the catbox, you can actually smell a faint scent reminiscent of bread dough. I've had the gerbil on for a few weeks now and he seems to be healthier than ever (now that he can use his wheel of course!)

You ever just sit down with a petsmart "yuor first ...." book and tried to count the number of things wrong?  I ahve fun doing it, but it's not a good thing cause so many people get educated thru these help guides and get the wrong information.  Petsmart is the secondmost popular place I go to to get rodent stuff, tho (first being walmart, lol!), but I don't trust em.  They had minks the other day, which was cute, as well as always having other beautiful colours in rodents, who're kept on carefresh, and are never sold as feeders, bu petsmart advice sux.

Well, thanx!

I use and love walnut bedding. It doesn't make me sick, doesn't seem to smell, and the rats like digging in it.
I have a small cat litter scoop to take out rasins.

I love them!

The only time I don't use them is when I run out because my order's not in yet.  Shocked
