Started my 'Rat Garden' today!

Hi all,
Just got back from the
plant nursery
with strawberries, spearmint and lemon balm. I also got a large window box to plant them in. Now my ratties can play in the dirt, and nibble on the plants!
I'd let 'em out onto the grass, but my dad sprays weedkiller.
I'll let my girls go dig tomorrow...today they look too sleepy!

That's neat... now that I'm settled in my new, and larger, home I can get started on more rat projects. I've been wanting to make up a digging box for a while now but never had the room for it. Be sure to post some pictures!

Hi Irene,
That's wonderful. The ratties will love it. Thanks for the
idea, I think I'll try that too since our grass here is fertilized also. Let us know how it goes.

Cool! I talked my Gram into starting the big garden up again this year.
We're going to plant tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, pumpkins, summer squash, watermelon, carrots and broccoli. She is also going to have some onions in there as well. Inside I've got some catmint, st. johns wort, and thyme growing, plus some morning glories I'm going to put outside when they get larger.
After I get the morning glories transplanted outside I'm going to use the container as a digging box for the girls. I'll probably grow some cat grass to put in it, plus some dandilions too.

Rat gardens are lots of fun. I think it must satisfy some instinct to dig in the dirt and pull up plants. We have nasturtiums, mint, and some purple flowers whose names I don't know and several pans of wheatgrass. The girls like to sample each different kind of flower and leaf on the plants, and the dig up and eat the seed in the grass pans. Sometimes they eat the grass too. Sometimes they just knock everything over and track dirt all over my pants. I recommend keeping a wet rag handy so you can catch any muddy rats that look like they're headed for the rug.

When I still lived at home with my parents I used to grow a big vegetable garden with my grandparents too. We did cherry and beefsteak tomatoes, red and white potatoes, carrots, snap beans, pumpkins and some kind of squash, peas, cucumbers and zucchinis, as well as both kinds of mint and several other herbs/spices. It was a lot of fun. My grandfather was a merchant mariner too, so he had a lot of time off to really landscape the yard for optimal vegetable growing. After he died the gardening sort of tapered off and now my grandmother doesn't grow too much other than the beans but when I move home I hope to get out there and help her grow it all again. It's a great way to spend family time. I hope you and your grandmother have a lot of fun doing it.

What a good idea. I personally can't grow plants to save my life, but my fiance is wonderful at it. I'll have to ask him to set aside a place for a rattie garden for me.
