I'm a llama!

« on: May 22, 2003, 08:25:36 AM »

hi all..

i bought a Chipmunk cage to house my rats in (hey i was inexperienced Smiley ) the size etc is fine for my two females (just about, i plan to go bigger soon) but it didnt come with any platforms... i managed to find a corner unit from another cage in the shop and have used that, coupled with a large corner litter tray and a ramp.. but i need an extra couple of platforms and im having EXTREME trouble trying to find a suitable material to use thats big enough for the cage..

I could do with a 22x13 sheet for full coverage (with a hole cut for a ramp) of plastic or something.. What do you lot use when you have to make your own platforms up? The only thing i can find is clear polystrene sheets, but i dont want to use them. I've scoured B&Q, Homebase, Wikkes etc for something like a plastic container with a good sized base i can cut up, but havent found one big enough..

Has anyone got any suggestions? Is there aplace you can order universal platforms for cages? I'm Stuck !! I've been searching for six weeks and need to sort something quick as im just not using the height the cage has to its potential.

Also, is there any other alternative to Bubble wave which wont end up costing me £50 to put tube ramps in it? Id prefer seethrough....

Cheers !

i haven't tried using it but maybe some of that plastic poster board would would work, you can get it at staples buisness depot i believe, because its plastic it should be easily cleaned and cut, and i think it should be sturdy enough to not cave in on them, im sure other people might have some better suggestions

A pretty cheap way to add some space is to use tupperware containers.  Buy a pretty big sized one (depending on the space in the cage) and then hang it up.  They can use that as a shelf/sleeping place.  I actually bought 2 little bins for my cage (in addition to the shelves and other junk they already have) that I hung up and they use them quite a bit.  Also, you can use PVC tubing instead of the bubble wave tubes.

I had the exact same problem with my old cage. I bought it under the impression I would be able to add levels myself (at the time, there were NO suitable cages for rats that I could find anywhere in the uk so it was my only choice) but I eventually got so annoyed at not finding anything that lasted much over a day that I splashed out and bought a whole new cage with levels and ramps.

its ridiculous.. you cant even buy a sheet of plastic anywhere in this country... it got to the point last night that i was going round industrial estates looking for a plastics company that has perhaps thrown out some offcuts of plastic  :   My eyes then started wandering to sandwich boards and wheelie bin lids  Grin (sanitized of course).. its amazing what you think of when youre desperate...
