Author Topic: Vet visit, bit of a surprise  (Read 384 times)

I took Attila to the vet today. Starting 2 days ago, he began to snore when he was asleep or relaxed. It was a bubbling clicking sound, like the sound Jack made one time when he was choking and got something in his lungs. Obviously I knew this wasn't good so I took him in today. I'm a bit surprised because I've never had any sort of respiratory infection come on like this. He's never been sneezy, never had porphryn, always been healthy, then one day out of the blue he starts making this noise.
Anyway, I saw a great vet (great for this area) who seemed to really know his stuff. He was willing to use ivermec topically for the mites (other vets tell you 'it can only be injected and if you don't want the injection we can't help you') and he went through the risks assocaited with ivermec (no other vet has ever bothered) even checked Gabriel out for me to see if he was blind (hes not, apparently. He sees light and dark but he doesn't have great eyesight) But when he listened to Attila's lungs he said 'yes, his lungs sound really bad' which kinda surprised me because every other respiratory infection I've ever had the vet has said 'hmmm, no too bad but I'll give you some baytril anyway' so I was expecting the same.
But how did this happen so soon? Attila isn't even a year old and has never shown any respiratory signs before.

Now I'm a bit worried.

Wow! I can't help you with this, but it is OUTSTANDING that you took Attila into the vet so quickly. And there is some comfort in this vet, I think; he sounds very good.

Did the vet think it was myco? pneumonia? something else?

Keep us updated.

Well, the vet didn't say but I think the general idea was a respiratory infection. He seems to only snuffle and wheeze when he's relaxing. If he's running about or playing, the sounds aren't noticable. But when he tries to sleep, you can hear them, even when I'm in bed I hear him. Like how dogs snore, but rat sized.
I am worried about him but I've done all I can, he's on baytril. If I see no obvious improvement, or even if it gets worse, I'm not gonna leave it. I don't want to mess about with this. Although he's still eating and playing, I know he's not right.

Is there anything I can do to make him more comfortable, especially at nights since I think he's having trouble sleeping because it keeps him up. I have put olbas oil on a tissue above the cage (it's an oil that is used to clear congestion) so he can inhale that but is there any kids flu remedies or anything I can give him to help him breathe or feel better? Anything like that that would be ok with baytril?

We used Eucalyptus oil and peppermint oil in a burner in the room - on the vets suggestion, to try and help congestion.

Obviously we only left the burner going while we were around - not overnight Shocked 2
