Ugh. Once again the breeder sent us a girl (we're an all male store) and we didn't catch it. I SWEAR she had nuts, and after checking once on deliviery and once a couple days later I didn't think to check again.

Anyways- she was seperated a few days ago for a wound, which turns out to be a good thing since she popped out 10 babies yesterday.  No wonder she had a wound.  Poor thing in with the boys.  (We never saw the, uhm, foreplay- ironically the only cage we saw "that" activity in is the Blue rats cage- who are all definate males...so of course, it was never alerted to our attention for that reason either...)

I'm kicking myself, I really am. ME of all people.

Anyways, we can't sell them at the store for USDA reasons, and I hate letting them be adopted for free, even though all my coworkers do thier best to assure they aren't going as feeders- but when you can't legally sell them, that's how they find homes.

I'm debating on wether or not I want to take them as more fosters in 4 weeks or not... I havn't even mentioned it to my husband- he'll flip.

SOOO I just wanted to get this post out in case any one wants some babies in 4 weeks! They're 24 hours as of this post, so it's gonna be 4 weeks. And since they are so young I can sex them easier- it's easier for me when thier younger. I dunno why...

Any replies to this post will probably be adopted thru RAATS in the Carolinas, just so that a contract can be filled out. Unless you come to the store, where they have thier own non-sale adoptions contract.  Either way they are free to a *good* home.

I'm in Greenville, NC and transport can be provided thru most of NC, and posibly southern VA......

Thanks....   Worry

Bonnie, I could make room for a few more foster babies (not 10 mind you) if you decide to take them home.  Let me know.

Oh yeh, an update on those.

I talked to my regional manager and he said that it's the fault of the breeder, not mine (though I still feel guilty)...anyways, he is seeing if I can send them back to the breeder instead of adopting them out from the backroom....

Thing is he dosen't know what will happen to them if sent back. I told them that if they were to be euthanized (since technically they were bred in a pet store/non USDA license, though looking at the dates I got rats in she may of already been pregnant) anyways- if they are to be euthanized, then I don't want to send them back and I told him I knew of a rescue I could send them to. I didn't tell him it was a rescue I am a part of...heehee.... but either way, he said he'd find out for me.

In loving memory of Zephyr. You are sorely missed.

We had that happen a few months ago with our Siberian hamsters.. we had a female that we didn't catch and she popped out four babies.  Our manager chose to send them back at FOUR DAYS OLD!   Angry  I'm sure they died on the way back... sigh...

If it were up to me, I wouldn't send them back at all.  Who KNOWS what happens to them there.. especially considering the condition they arrive in in the first place.

If you need me as transport, Bonnie, I've got VA covered.

OH goodness. if I find out they WONT be euthanized and I send them back, it wont be til they are weaned, and I seperate them.  They were a week old yesterday, so not for another 3 weeks minimum.

Yeh I am worried that they'll get euthanized. in that case I have a couple volunteers to help me foster...I promised Jeremy I wouldn't take all 10 home...well, 11- mom.

Last time they sent us a girl she only had 3 rats. 3 babies and a mom is easy to find homes for.  10 babies and a mom is tricky, and we run greater risk at them being feeders.   Lips Sealed  Which is why I want to send them back providing they wont be euthanized, or have RAATS take them in....

OKAY a representative from the breeders called me back (well it was my day off so he talked to my lead) and he said that if they were to be sent back, the babies would be distributed thru other stores...  this looks like my best option, even though I'm still not totally agreeing with it, just on the fact as they will find homes more quickly if they are spread over a few stores, than if I take them in (Or than if RAATS takes them in).

At least they won't be euthanized...

Bonnie,
I may be able to make room for any males you may have...if that would make you feel any better. I have 4 males now and they are all so laid back that intros wouldn't be a problem or anything. I am also buying another cage soon so I may be able to take any females too...

I just wanted to let you know that if you were worried about them getting homes or anything like that, I'm here. I'm in NE Tennessee and I can help out.

Angelldust- that would be great if I could get them to you. There is no way I can get to TN though. I can go as far as Greensboro NC and that's not even 1/2 way probably.

So unless anyone is planning a trip from Greensboro to TN anytime soon?  I see on the other thread that you are planning to make it out for our rat adoptions day (which is truely awesome!) but the babies will only be 2 1/2 weeks old so you couldn't have them that day...

It's really not *too* much of an emergency since I know that I can send them back and they won't be euthanized.

Plus I finally convinced a coworker to get a pair! She wanted one but I am making her get 2...  Grin

OK....here goes...I (LIZ the gentle RAT LOVER) can NOT take any more at this time (I don't *think*..LOL) BUT, I have a VERY good friend who lives in Franklin, NC right at the line.  I have to drive thru Asheville to get there.  Anyhoo, I can either transport them when I go for a visit at the semesters end (end of the first week in May)-OR when he comes down I can get HIM to take them back with him.  Either way its a good Transport to the state line.

Hey Tracy, did you see our topic on the MP rats? I still have 2 boys at my store for adoption, but KayR came and took the rest for adoptions and fostering.

Either way, RAATS in the Carolinas has LOTS of rats for adoption right now.  SaniTsPlayground lives in Charlotte, NC and has many fosters currently.

You can either email me at adoptions@carolinarats.org or contact SaniT herself.
