I'm a llama!

« on: May 24, 2003, 11:55:42 PM »

Hey, anyone, I'm in the rat fan club, and yet I DON'T HAVE RAT!!! Does anyone out there have what I'm looking for?: female rat, gentle, black preferably, likes to be petted, doesn't bite. If you have any kind of rat that sounds like the one I want, PLEASE reply.

Please consider getting a pair of rats instead of only one. Rats are very social and get lonely without friends to play with.

Have a look here for breeders in your local area:

http://www.justrats.com/breeders/

It's fantastic that you've found this place - it's full of useful information about the care of rats as pets. If these will be your first rats, it's a great idea to have a read through the info here, or check out the links, which are really informative too! They'll help you give your rats the best possible care you can, and you'll get a lot more out of keeping them if they're content.
Hope you find some cuties, we'll all be waiting impatiently for pictures!

I'm located in Fresno, CA.

CA is just loaded with rats right now.. you should have no problem finding just what you are looking for.. being on the other side of the continent I am not real sure about CA geography but there are several listings for rats in CA right on this board..

Yep, just look right here on this board.  There's rescue litters in Sacramento, San Jose, Berkeley, and outside of San Francisco (me).  There are still more rescues in Santa Cruz.  A lot has been going on over here.   Tongue

That's great & all, but you should know Petco is a dirty word around here.  Many of the posters here do not advocate shopping there for ANY reason, and it is generally preferred that people get rats from a breeder or from a rescue rather than a pet store.

Many posters here have rats from pet stores (myself included) but not necessarily from Petco.

When rescues and good breeders ARE available, though, they are far better places to obtain rats than any pet store. And regardless of how PetCo treats you, they are notorious for treating their animals poorly. Giving money to places like that only supports their practices.

Not to mention that wonderful feeling of knowing you've actually had a part in saving a life when you rescue!   Ratty Smiley

Good luck finding what you're looking for, Invader Lexx -- my Mina sounds like exactly what you want, and she's just beautiful.  Wink

I don't know where you are in conjunction with this place, but it's worth a peek.  Also, rat trains are formed all the time, so I don't see why one couldn't get rolling in your area.

I also have a rescue litter of black rats. I have 2 girls left one perfect irish and one berk. I live in Boise Idaho but am down in Sacramento all the time and might be able to make arrangements with you if you were willing to travel to sacramento. The babies are 3 months old and very social. Please see pics at my site.

bosco, most people try to get their rats from reputable breeders or rescues, because most do not like to support the pet store trade.

that being said, many of us, myself including, do have pet store rats and love them jsut the same. but i prefer to use pet stores that treat their animals with great care, etc. i no longer give my money to a pet store that doesnt feed their animals nutritious foods, bed them on the correct things, etc. BUT -t his is not the place for this discussion - you can PM me if you want to talk more about pet stores and why we don't support them.

and in all respect, Kim's ark was the first transport really arranged to get to WI, and we only touched a small part. There are few people in the midwest looking to transport, as we all found out. and as a youngster, bosco won't be doing much driving Smiley If he can get in touch with Mead Hall, that would be great. But I dont think Bosco is looking for any rats now anyway (but if you are, i also know of someone who has 4 baby males needing placement, they are very sweet and well socialized, in Racine WI)

There are lots and lots of rescue rats who need homes in California right now, so please do adopt one rather than supporting a petstore. I have a rescue mom and her litter of 9 beautiful babies right now. I live in Berkeley, but I'm very sure that we could arrange transport to an adopter in Fresno. Please do contact me if you're interested. You can send me a PM here on the forum or send email to rkrobel@uclink.berkeley.edu. I have a number of lovely black and white hoodeds and berkshires, as well as 2 blue capped babies. Here are a few recent photos (you can see more pictures here):

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. I don't want to go to a petstore for a rat. But I think I know where I'm getting a rat already, but thanks anyways. And Invader Zim was a good show. If you like it a lot and want it back, go to gir.n3.net
