I'm a llama!

« on: May 31, 2003, 09:51:08 PM »

This summer for a week I will be gone. No one will be home except a rat, hammie, and a cat. I'm not so much worried about the cat vs. the rat cage roofing. But what I am afriad of is rattie depression. I know I should have bought two rats when I was at the pet store, but three things stood in the way: parents, space, and heirarchy. I read about rats needing a same species friend with them and how they can become depressed if they don't have a cage-mate or enough interaction. There is most likely no way I can take him to the cabin with me (not sure if the grounds have animal rules). If we can keephim with us, great, I'm sure it'll be fun for him. But would it be OK to buy a rattie friend for him? I've been considering it now, but I'm also concerned about the male heirarchy. Of course every rat is individual, so maybe it won't happen, but I remember somewhere on this forum that they had a male heirarchy problem where one became jittery or something similar (sorry, I forget who posted that one). There is definately no problem for interaction with me and I would of course quarantine and intro before throwing them together. I'm sorry if this is confusing with how many things I have babbled about  Tongue. I feel really bad about having to leave him for a week! We're too attached  Heart. Two final questions, Any suggestioned for a full procedure on a new pet quarantine? I was thinking two to three weeks... I recently saw some ratty babies in one store, If I waited a while until they got older should I get one of them as a pal? They most likely wouldn't be related... (Rambo is about a month or two old... grrr pet stores)

Thankyou for any answers, I really apreciate it!

Has your issue with space changed?  Do you have room for it?  If so, then I say go for it.  You MAY need to have 1 or both of them neutered, though, and intros COULD be tricky.  If you're going to make this leap, you need to make it soon so you can do intros and get one neutered if necessary, and let it heal, etc., and all before you leave.

That's about right.  Quarantine at a friend's house if possible.

Why not adopt from a local rat rescue or the animal shelter or get one from a breeder?  These are all better options than a pet store.  You even said it yourself:  "grrr petstores."
