I'm looking for a pet rat or two in the Chicagoland area. Color is of no importance, but I would prefer that they are young-ish (18 months at oldest).

I have contacted a few ratteries in the area, but I'd prefer to rescue some ratties in need if at all possible. Thanks so much,

Ellen

There is a person here in W. Lafayette, IN with several ratties for adoption.  They were a surprise pregnancy from 3 ratties he had adopted.  The babies are already 2-3 monthes old.  He has 2 girls still for adoption and 2 boys also.  I've seen them, and while I was tempted to bring them home with me, I realize I can't take in so many extra little ones.  The girls both look to be a light brown capped.  (i'm not sure of the exact color to call them, but they are gorgeous).  One of the two girls has a face spot.  The boys are 1 very light colored masked and one that appears to be a mink to me.  I played with the girls for a little while.  One of them is very quiet and reserved and only interested in sleeping.  The other is a climbing, exploring maniac.  I think they make a very good pair.  If you're interested, contact: akbara@purdue.edu .  If after contacting him, you are still interested, I am willing to drive them up to you in Chicago.  I have family near there in Monee.  Feel free to contact me with any questions.

I am also from West Lafayette, IN and wonder if kikoalex is our vet!  Anyway, I am posting on behalf of a friend who also has rats that need homes.  There are 7 females and 1 male and they are 4 weeks old.  The friend is keeping one of the females, and we are taking the other 6 females, but also hoping to give some of them to good homes.  The male needs a home badly because we do not want any more rat pregnancies.  She got a free rat and it gave birth about a week after she got it.  The rats seem very affectionate and healthy, although I am not a vet.  I am traveling to Chicago this weekend and would be willing to transport the rats to a good home in that area if necessary.  There are 2 albino females, and the rest are mostly black with some white markings.  I have digital photos if you want to see them.   The family who has them is very short on funds and cannot afford to keep the rats.  So we are doing what we can to help them.

Hello! I am located in Lafayette, IN. I currently have four rats that are in need of good homes. They are all rescues, about 4 months old. All males, two agoutis, a black and I'm not sure on the other ones color.  If you are interested I can email you pics. You can email me at lonehowl@hotmail.com

There's some of the Menlo Park Rescue rats being fostered in that area as well if you're interested.

Nope, I'm not the vet.  Although I do know of an EXCELLENT vet in lafayette if you're interested.  I was considering taking in the girls before I found out that an adoption I had set-up had fallen through.  This past weekend, I managed to get 2 of the 4 girls to their new homes.  I was given permission  Wink from my boyfriend to keep the other two girls, so I won't have to part with them.  But that brings me to 5 ratties, and while I would love to have more, I think that is really our personal limit.  Rescues are one thing, but taking in more permanent residents really isn't fair to them.  But if anyone needs to get ratties from Lafayette/West Lafayette to Chicago (or Indianapolis) I'm more than willing to help.

I think we probably see the same vet - we see Dr. Wolfe and he is great!  We got the females tonight, and they are so precious.  Will make an appointment
with the vet pronto to make sure they are in good health.  Seems like our area has a lot of rats available for adoption.  I hope we can all find good homes for them.

We have 3 rescue girlies here (AWL); they're a PEW, an Agouti mismarked Bareback and a Beige Mismarked hooded- all are dumbo.  We're located in Chicago as well.

Wow... so many little guys that need homes.

The current status of the rat situation:

I ended up taking a young male rat that was rescued from the Chicago Animal Welfare League. I just picked him up today, and wow... I can't believe I waited this long to get a rat. I love him soo much. However, I'd still like to get him a buddy. I'm thinking I should probably go with a younger male... (he's about 4-5 months at the moment). I realize this probably narrows the fields quite a bit... hopefully we can still find something. Kikoalex, you had mentioned two boys in Indiana, is there any chance I can see pictures or whatnot?
