I think that once they're out of the pet store and being cuddled and kissed and lavished with attention, and all these new toys and foods and comforting surroundings, they forget everything about the nasty pet store. Wink

I dont think the younger ones do, but I think my mamma rat does. She was a year old when we got her from the shelter.

What I really wonder is if they remember other rats? I wonder if the mamma rat remembers any of her other babies or her mate, and I often wonder if Pepper remembers her original cage mate, who died about 6 months ago.

I think they do! When Ratatouille had to have surgery for a mammary tumour, she was out of the cage for a couple of months. When she was all healed up I was able to put her right back into the cage with the other girls without any more than a butt-sniff from the others. They seemed to remember her very well, and were cuddled together in the hammock within an hour. Wink

I can't vote -- mine came from a breeder.  Grin

Of the twelve rats I have had over the last six years, only three came from a pet store...

I can't say because I won't get rats from a pet store although I'm sure rats would remember litter mates because they are so smart.

I got my ratties from a breeder. The breeder I got Evelyn from rescued her.  (Thanks Catalyst!  Grin) I think Evee remembers her siblings. And I'm sure Caldecott remembers her brothers and sisters. I think my ratties pretty content where they are.  Grin

My baby plays hide-and-go-seek!

To this day, Ennoia does not really like spending time with other people or even other rats.  She loves me, and will come when I call, but she would rather be in her roller-ball than on my shoulder.

We still have lots of good times, and I honestly believe that she is the most intelligent rat I have ever owned.  She has trained me well.   Grin

Lucky. Wink There aren't any breeders anywhere around here. I'd breed them myself if I didn't get so emotional when a baby died...

Thankfully our pet store breeds their own rats and you can meet your new ratty's parents, grandparents and even their great-grandparents!
