The Humane Society near me claims to have 4-year old rats:

RATS

Scroll down from rabbits to where rats are listed.

I was amazed to see not one, but two rats that someone claimed were four years old!!!

I am tempted to go down there and see what they look like, especially since one is a PEW named Hobbs (reminds me of my own sweet Hobbs, RIP).  Smiley

I apologize in advance if they take the listing of the rats off -- just in case they get adopted!  Wink

I bet it's a typo.  They mean 4 months, not 4 years Smiley

maybe they don't know rats too well and assume they live like seven years or something so just made a really bad estimate of their age. Or it could be a typo. But it's not unheard of. I had a friend with a four year old rat.

I think it is your duty to go and adopt Calvin, Hobbs and Niffler - now that you have made us all fall in love with them Wink

Definitely not four years old - knowing what a three year old rat (minus four days and counting) looks like Shocked 2

Rats CAN live to be 4 years old though. My girl Skye lived to be 4.5 and Zoe lived to be almost 4. I swear, I got them from my school where we monitored them and I knew which week she was born, and she lived to be 4.5! She was my first rat ever.  Embarrassed

My very first rat, Snowmizer, lived to be almost 5. He was very thin, but kept his fur obsessively neat, and passed one morning in his sleep in a beam of sunlight on my mother's desk.  Snowy spoiled me, because it was 1986 when he passed on, and I didn't know at all that rats don't generally live so long. Isis, my brown agouti female, made it to 4 years and two months, and Sisi, who followed soon after, to 3 years and 11 months.

But I would certainly guess that the shelter either a) doesn't know rats or b) suffered typo-itis

I've had a rat live to be over 4. and was quite healthy. He didnt "look" his age either before he passed, We had him since he had his baby fuzz, so we knew in fact he WAS that old. Smiley

I wouldnt assume it to be a typo personally since they dont look as young as 4 months.
(but what I stated above could also apply, only backwards.)

It's pretty unlikely that they're 4 years old. I once had a rat live to over 5 once, though, so I know it's possible! She looked pretty good, too...still had her fur and everything. She passed gently in her sleep.

But who would take their four year old rats to the shelter? Cry If they are that old,  you should take them so they could finish up their golden years with you. Grin

I was thinking the same thing!  If these rats are INDEED four years old, it is such a shame their former owner did not keep them in their golden years!  Undecided

I MAY consider getting them IF they are indeed four years old.  I adopted Bear when I learned she was two years old because I wanted her to be happy in her remaining months (she's still alive and kickin'!)

I'll post on here Monday when I see the rats and find out more details...  Blue Dumbo Smile

Okay, here's the update:

I went to the Humane Society on Saturday to check these geriatric rats out!

Instead of Calvin and Hobbs, I saw 4-year old Snickers and Butterfinger!    I think they were the same rats as seen on the internet because that's exactly who they looked like!

The info sheet on them said they were in a classroom and the owner (I am assuming was a teacher) had them for 2 years -- maybe he/she got them when they were 2?  They are very TAME because they were in a classroom environment and had free range during the day and were put in their cage at night!  I'm picturing these rats running around the classroom during the day...

They were fed Kaytee Rat Food and the albino has an eye infection on her left eye because she was allergic to cedar  Angry    The rats were kept in a 20 gallon aquarium at the HS and had shredded paper for bedding and also a water bottle and food (no wheel/toys).  Since they were very tame, I opened the lid and picked each one up!  They were total sweeties!!  Kiss  I was VERY torn between taking them or not that day.

On one hand, I had 10 rats, 6 guinea pigs and 2 rabbits that need my attention.  On the other hand, they were absolute sweethearts and finding rats THAT tame to me (my Hobbs the exception) was rare.
I did not take them but I wanted to think about it for Wednesday when they were open until 7 p.m. (after work  Wink)  I'm leaving it to fate whether they're still there or not.  If they're still there, I'll get them; if not someone has two of the friendliest/sweetest rats out there!!!  Grin

By the way, they could go either way on the age thing.  They SEEMED older...  Tongue

Well, I went there on Wednesday and saw them again...and adopted them!!!  Grin

They are such SWEETHEARTS!!  Kiss  A lady at the Humane Society getting a cat asked where the rats were.  I went back, showed her and even held one of them for her to see how great rats were!  She was impressed, although she didn't want to hold one...

Oh well, they're mine all mine!  Cheeky  They are also well behaved.  I had to get up a few times from the couch where they were and they NEVER jumped off or even tried to!  They seemed happy just wandering around on the couch, and running under the pillows.  Very tame, very cool!  Cool

If you want to see what they look like, see the first post where the link is.  They are not marked as adopted, but I have them!!!

« Reply #21 on: June 19, 2003, 07:10:41 PM »

As a teacher who has rats, it doesn't make me happy that another teacher would surrender friendly classroom rats to the humane shelter. I guess that's better than some things that could have happened to them, but I'm wondering what the story was.

I LOVE my rats!  All of them are mine, but some live a lot of the year in my classroom.  I'd NEVER part with any of them.

I'm so glad you got them.  At least they're with an experienced rat person who knows how to treat them right.

I'm suprised, too, that none of the students would want them. But, YIPPEEE!!! Balloon I'm so glad you got them. Even if they're "only" 2, that's pretty geriatric, so I'm glad they get a nice retirement! Cheesy

Thanks, everybody!  Hyper

DebW, I agree...why would a teacher get rid of his/her rats or not offer them to one of the students?

Calvin (who is renamed Molly) is a black/white hooded rat.  She is definitely the sweeter of the two...she was on my shoulder and kissed my cheek a few times...and when she was on my lap her eyes boggled! Ratty Smiley  Hobbs (who is renamed Katie) is pretty sweet too!

Since Hobbs' death, I never thought I would get another exceptional rat, let alone two!   I love them both!  Heart

I had a hampster that lived to be five (not joking!) when she lost weight for the last time before she passed away, and we called the vet he said he wouldn't see her! he'd seen her two years before at three for weight loss, and the diagnosis had been 'old age'!!!  Shocked 2
